Shelter Workers provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.

2 Positions:

#1: 1 - 9 a.m. shift, 4 days (32 hours)/week

#2: 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. shift, 5 days (40 hours)/week

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Shelter Workers provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.
  • Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
  • Oversee Café Operations with Family services Worker (Laundry, Showers, Breakfast, Lunch) and provides training/supervision to the Café volunteers
  • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
  • Monitor Services Lists (Case Planning, Outreach, Nurse, Counseling)
  • Lunch Set up/Lunch cleanup
  • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. welfare, police, parole, urgent situations)
  • Coordinates client care relating to security issues; doing bed checks, room/personal searches
  • May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients' understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
  • Monitoring the clients in the day room/ Smoke Pit
  • May handle finances relating to room rentals and meal tickets, and receipting of same
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months (Addictions Facilities).

NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

Education/Certifications:

  • The successful applicant will hold/have:
  • Completion of High School plus post-secondary diploma or certificate (Degree or Diploma in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or related field is preferred)
  • Valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes.
  • Must obtain a Criminal Record Check in accordance with Criminal Records Review Program.
  • Certificate in First Aid and CPR Training
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures in addition to health and safety rules:

  • Universal precautions
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis
  • WHMIS training

Experience:

More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including, experience with frontline work in a social services setting

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Willingness to adhere to the mission and values of The Salvation Army
  • Agreeable to a flexible, non-routine schedule. Willing to work long hours including weekends
  • Enthusiastic team player with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to provide training and support to volunteers
  • High standards of integrity, judgment and confidentiality
  • Strong decision-making and organizational skills
  • Proficiency on standard computer programs (word processing, spreadsheets, database) and general office equipment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to meet deadlines and cope with stressful situations
  • Knowledge and interest in the programs and services The Salvation Army provides

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Preference to those who have completed High School plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months
  • Related experience in social services field
  • Current valid BC driver's license and clean driving record an asset
  • General office skills and experience would be considered an asset
  • Volunteer experience would be an asset
