Detailed Overview

The Site Leader is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the delivery of direct patient/resident care at the Regional Hospitals after hours, on weekends and/or as assigned including the overall responsibility for the supervision of staff and the effectiveness of care provided on the units.

Provides leadership and direction to Patient Care Coordinators and/or Charge Nurses; makes critical decisions and solves complex problems which impact patient/resident care and safety; assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of patient/resident service interfaces between clinical units/departments; coordinates hospital operations in accordance with established policies & standards of quality and patient care.

Facilitates alignment/realignment of staffing resources; provides timely and autonomous decisions regarding bed utilization and appropriate patient/resident placement (access); ensures patient/resident safety protocols are followed and staffing issues are addressed in accordance with collective agreements /administrative policies.

Develops and maintains effective working relationships with on-site medical and clinical healthcare providers, management and administrative personnel; addresses and facilitates resolution of customer service/client relations issues.


Responsibilities

  1. Oversees and coordinates delivery of direct patient/resident care at the Regional Hospitals after hours, on weekends and/or as assigned.
  2. Directs Patient Care Coordinators (PCCs) and/or Charge Nurses and coordinates appropriate patient/resident placement and/or discharge needs. Assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of patient/resident placement, patient flow and bed utilization and recommends areas for improvement.
  3. Liaises with the Access Coordinator and BC Bedline to facilitate patient/resident transfers. Collaborates in the identification and resolution of patient/resident care issues, ethical questions/issues and the coordination and integration of care.
  4. Assesses critical situations and makes decisions on course of action, including bed utilization and authorization of bed openings. Liaises with Administrator on Call (AOC) as required.
  5. Ensures that appropriate resources are available, including staffing, to provide safe care. Assesses workload/staffing needs, allocates staff and authorizes the use of overtime.
  6. Liaises and collaborates with Staffing Office to ensure optimal staffing levels are maintained and the use of overtime is effectively monitored.
  7. Interviews, selects and supervises staff, delegates work and provides input to Managers for performance appraisals. Provides support to preceptors and preceptees, monitors and evaluates the progress of new staff through consultation with the preceptor and communicates staff performance information to the Manager.
  8. Investigates and resolves staff issues in accordance with collective agreement provisions and hospital policies; refers contentious and disciplinary staff issues to the Manager.
  9. Attends to problem/conflict situations, customer service/client relations issues and facilitates successful resolution by meeting with patients/residents/families, initiating appropriate corrective action and recommending changes to existing policies and/or procedures.
  10. Ensures there is appropriate follow-up to the contingency staffing plan in clinical areas and communicates concerns/issues to the Manager(s), Clinical Operations.
  11. Accountable for the optimal use of patient/resident care resources; identifies opportunities for improved utilization of resources; provides input into the budget and makes recommendations regarding resources management.
  12. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures, protocols and standards related to patient care.
  13. Identifies quality improvement opportunities and promotes continuous quality improvement activities by utilizing and promoting nursing research to ensure patient care is based on best practices.
  14. Promotes and monitors safe work practices and enforcement of health & safety requirements. Ensures unsafe situations are reported; investigates and initiates corrective action.
  15. Implements safety, fire prevention and evacuation procedures as required. Investigates and completes accident and incident reports; communicates outcomes to the Manager and/or Director. Participates in Emergency Preparedness activities; acts as incident commander as assigned.
  16. Collaborates with managers/educators to provide opportunities for continuous learning to ensure staff remain current with best practices in accordance with established standards.
  17. Promotes research based practice by collaborating with others and promoting staff awareness and involvement in research activities, identifies practices/issues that require research and facilitates the development of ongoing research.
  18. Participates on designated local and regional program and professional committees as assigned.
  19. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an approved School of Nursing.

Five (5) years' recent, relevant, acute care experience, including a minimum of two (2) years' experience in a supervisory and/or administrative capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
