Detailed Overview
Reporting to the Supervisor, Radiological Technology and the Site Coordinator, Medical Imaging, the Radiological Technologist, practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice as well as within a client and family centered care model and the vision and values of the department within Fraser Health (FH).
The Radiological Technologist is responsible for permanent evening, night or weekend shifts or working without general supervision. Performs diagnostic radiographic examinations in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, observing safe radiation protection practices. Duties include receiving and completing requisitions, entering relevant data into the radiology information system, preparing patients for examination, monitoring patients during procedures, operating radiographic equipment including processing radiographs and maintaining cleanliness of examination rooms.
Responsibilities
- Receives requisitions from physicians for diagnostic radiographic examinations and performs duties such as verifying that requisitions comply with departmental standards with regard to information supplied, entering patient information into the radiology information and image processing systems as required and following up on missing and/or incomplete information by returning requisitions to appropriate personnel or contacting referring unit. Performs other associated clerical duties such as storing and retrieving images in order to complete patient examination when required.
- Arranges for transportation of patients if necessary according to departmental procedure.
- Prepares patient for examination by methods such ensuring the patient is appropriately gowned, explaining procedure and answering patient questions with regard to the procedure where possible, assisting or transferring the patient to the examination table and ensuring patient comfort during this process.
- Performs requested examination observing departmental standards and routines by methods such as verifying identity of patient and examination details prior to start of procedure, and observing correct use of radiographic equipment and radiation protection practices during procedure.
- Processes images using appropriate equipment and checks resultant images for technical quality. Refers problems in image quality to the Supervisor. Stores digital images using appropriate equipment.
- Assists the Radiologist in fluoroscopic procedures by methods such as positioning patient, opening sterile supplies and ensuring patient comfort.
- Prepares contrast agents required for examinations by filling syringes, mixing barium solutions and similar duties as required. Prepares tray set-up for procedures by methods such as selecting required stock items, opening wrappings, maintaining sterility of contents, disposing of items after the procedure according to hospital policy, and cleaning of instruments for return to Sterile Processing.
- Transports mobile radiographic equipment and supplies to and from various areas of the hospital and performs radiographic examinations where required using such equipment.
- Observes patient condition during examination and calls for nursing or medical staff assistance as required.
- Maintains cleanliness of the examinations rooms by wiping down radiographic equipment, examination tables, and counter tops with disinfectant solution, tidying examinations rooms, maintaining supplies at a safe operational level, and storing items in appropriate areas; notifies building services of special cleaning requirements.
- Performs forensic radiography examinations as directed.
- Demonstrates examination procedures to other employees and students as required.
- Participates in the departmental Continuous Quality Improvement/LEAN programs by using established monitoring and auditing methodologies to perform quality assurance checks such as patient/physician satisfaction or booking protocols.
- Participates in approved research and special projects in collaboration with Supervisor and other health care professionals.
- Sets measurable goals and objectives within a team or individual environment, incorporating the organization's vision and values, goals and corporate plan by such maintaining and updating own knowledge of clinical and professional development within area of practice, and developing plan in collaboration with supervisor; reviews progress to ensure that goals are achieved within established time frames.
- Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience
Certification with the CAMRT.
