Detailed Overview

Under the direction of the Coordinator, Rehabilitation & Recovery, the Exercise Therapist, as a member of a multidisciplinary team, participates in program development, implementation and evaluation; provides screening and assessment of mental health clients in various communities throughout an assigned geographical area who are referred to the gym program in order to assist them in attaining recommended fitness and lifestyle goals; consults with staff to ensure clients are safely supported in their exercise regime; assists in development of policies and procedures; maintains statistical records.
Responsibilities

  1. Using evidence based practice and established medical protocols, provides intake screening and ongoing assessment of clients; develops exercise plans and provides fitness counselling.
  2. Participates in program development; develops and maintains working relationships with outside agencies.
  3. Monitors fitness progression of clients and adjusts exercise plan in consultation with the staff team working with the client.
  4. Communicates with the team about participant status and progress through team consultation, charting on Meditech and other forms of communication as required. Notifies physician and/or psychiatrist and case manager of condition changes.
  5. Develops dynamic exercise classes and leads exercise classes such as group exercise to music, step aerobics, power walking and weight training.
  6. Provides personal instruction for strength training, and other exercise personal training for those clients wanting individual assistance.
  7. Assists in monitoring participants' response to exercise during exercise training class and individual exercise programs.
  8. Provides orientation, direction, instruction and/or supervision to students during clinical placements; assists with practicum placement program; evaluates and documents student performance.
  9. Assists in development, implementation and evaluation of department policies, procedures and programs and maintains statistical records on department activities; contributes to resource information.
  10. Participates in the orientation of staff for the safe use of exercise equipment.
  11. Maintains a safe environment by reporting faulty equipment, keeping supplies stocked and cleaning up equipment as required.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology or Human Kinetics from a recognized program, and Clinical Exercise Physiologist certification from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP).

One year recent related experience working in the community mental health field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Eligible for registration with relevant professional association.

Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.

Valid BC Driver's license and access to personal vehicle with appropriate business coverage.



Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated basic understanding and application of rehabilitation principles. Knowledge of both aerobic and strength training equipment, modalities and protocols.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others, including strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of group dynamics.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
