The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030.

Highlights of the two-phase redevelopment project include:

  • Expanded Emergency Department with additional treatment spaces
  • New health care pavilion with 83 beds to support maternity, neonatal intensive care, medicine and mental health patients
  • New operating rooms, procedure rooms and recovery spaces
  • New acute care tower with 160 beds
  • New medical imaging department
  • New integrated BC Cancer Centre

Burnaby Hospital plays an essential role to those living in the community by delivering a variety health care services. Services and specialties include emergency medicine, intermediate-level critical care, medical imaging, internal medicine, hospitalist medicine, geriatric medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, palliative, psychiatry, oncology, outpatient clinics, and an extensive surgery program with anesthesia, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and plastics specialties.

Detailed Overview

In accordance with the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Health Care Assistant works under the direction of a professional nurse (Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Nurse Practitioner (NP)), in cooperation with the interprofessional care team, and following established care plans and person-centered care. Provides personal care to patients such as assisting with toileting, bathing, skin and hair care, oral hygiene, grooming, dressing, changing beds, patient positioning and mobilization. Observes and reports patient progress, assists patients with meals, transports patients, and performs related general duties. Dismantles, cleans, washes, and reassembles related emergency room equipment; transports instruments and equipment; distributes instruments and supplies; maintains equipment & supplies; restocks and sets up intravenous (IV) carts; transports specimens as required.
Responsibilities

  1. Provides personal care to patients such as assisting patients with toileting, bathing, skin and hair care, oral hygiene, grooming, dressing, changing beds, patient positioning and mobilization.
  2. Observes and reports patient progress including anticipated/unanticipated patient responses to care, patient discomfort and/or pain, skin breakdowns, and unusual incidents and/or accidents to the designated RN/RPN/LPN/NP.
  3. Cleans equipment after use, disassembles, washes and reassembles equipment according to established procedures; replaces worn parts on equipment such as tubing, light bulbs as required.
  4. Assembles and disassembles instrument trays for attending Physician such as suture, ENT and plastics trays.
  5. Prepares and transports soiled instruments and equipment from the Emergency Room utilizing principles of containment; locates and obtains instruments/supplies as required; practices principles of Infection Control.
  6. Ensures equipment, supply, utility and cast rooms including shelving containing sterile and clean supplies are kept tidy.
  7. Distributes instruments, supplies, linen and equipment in accordance with established procedures and standards.
  8. Ensures mobile equipment is maintained and complete; maintains supplies to pre-determined levels on the appropriate ER carts and supply areas.
  9. Re-stocks supplies such as sutures, oxygen supplies, linens and sets up intravenous (IV) carts according to established procedures; stocks supplies in bedside units and fills supply requests.
  10. Transports specimens to the lab.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 10, plus graduation from a recognized Health Care Assistant program, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
