Chénchenstway is a 216-bed long-term care community offering residents privacy and comfort with private rooms, individual washrooms, and accessible outdoor spaces. Formerly the New Vista long-term care home, the renovations were undertaken in partnership with Providence Health Care and Vancouver Coastal Health to help ensure that more seniors have access to high-quality and dignified care.

Detailed Overview
Reports to the Manager, Clinical Operations and works in collaboration with the Recreation Therapist in recreation program planning; implements and evaluates recreation/leisure program(s) designed to support residents’ health and well being in the care home setting. Supervises Recreation Assistants.
Responsibilities
- In accordance with the recreation program, prepares a calendar of events, arranges outings and food preparation activities, and instructs participants in the techniques and any required adaptations of related activities to meet the needs of the resident.
- Determines the recreation/leisure program(s) which meet the resident's needs and abilities by reviewing the care plan, interviewing the /resident regarding their social/leisure history, and consulting with family, the Recreation Therapist, and nursing staff; identifies, evaluates, implements, and documents recreation/leisure goals and objectives based on individual interests and abilities.
- Consults Recreation Therapist to arrange comprehensive therapeutic recreation assessments and interventions of residents.
- Provides input and recommendations to the recreation program in close coordination with Recreation Therapist. Implements and evaluates recreation/leisure program(s) including activities such as crafts, music, woodworking, mental aerobics, exercises, and sensory stimulation to meet /residents’/’ physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs and interests; collaborates with the Recreation Therapist to develop the goals and objectives of the program.
- Supervises Recreation Assistants by performing duties such as scheduling and coordinating work assignments, evaluating employee performance and determining related training and orientation requirements.
- Coordinates inventory of equipment, tools and materials and makes purchase recommendations.
- Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team in resident care, team meetings, care conferences and program related issues. Monitors, evaluates, and documents resident progress within the recreation/leisure program(s) and reports observations such as emotional well being and social behaviour to nursing/Recreation Therapist/medical staff as required.
- Monitors program expenditures and provides input to the program budget.
- Maintains a safe environment for residents, families, volunteers and staff by following established emergency and safety practices and procedures; identifies problems related to resident safety and care standards and informs the Recreation Therapist or designate.
- Schedules work assignments of and provides direction to designated volunteers; contacts facility administration or volunteer services for additional volunteer resources as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training & Experience
Graduation from a recognized recreational program plus three years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
