Detailed Overview

Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates music therapy programs and services in the assigned area. Participates in the development of new programs and/or services.


Responsibilities

  1. Participates in the development of new programs and/or services by identifying services and needs and contributing to the development of operational plans, goals and objectives, philosophy, vision and mission statements as required.
  2. Performs initial assessment of referred clients/residents by methods such as completing assessment forms, reviewing records, consulting with client/resident, family, and team members, and gathering relevant information.
  3. Plans individual and/or group music therapy programs and services by establishing and prioritizing expected outcomes, discussing implementation options and determining resources available.
  4. Implements music therapy programs and services utilizing diverse intervention approaches by methods such as improvisation, guided imagery, dementia care, and individual and group treatment programs.
  5. Monitors the quality and outcome of music therapy programs by methods such as determining the purpose, method, and criteria of the evaluation, implementing recommendations, analyzing and interpreting results, and modifying and/or ceasing services as needed.
  6. Manages the placement of music therapy students and interns and conducts each student’s performance appraisal.
  7. Prepares individualized and group orientation and education plans for interns and students.
  8. Participates in the identification, development, review and revision of policies and procedures of the department by methods such as collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, providing input and maintaining assigned policies and procedures.
  9. Participates in quality improvement activities by methods such as identifying needs, gathering information, providing input, and developing, implementing, and evaluating these activities.
  10. Participates in relevant interdisciplinary team conferences and/or family conferences by methods such as providing information about clients/residents on topics related to music therapy and contributing to the development of an interdisciplinary care plan for individual clients/residents.
  11. Maintains client/resident records, statistical data, and reports in accordance with department, organizational and professional standards by methods such as maintaining client/resident documentation and completing client/resident attendance and workload measurement statistics.
  12. Maintains inventory of music therapy equipment and supplies by methods such as making recommendations regarding purchase, providing general maintenance and repair of equipment and supplies, and completing documentation to have items purchased or repaired.
  13. Participates actively on committees and task groups by methods such as gathering information prior to meeting, attending meetings, providing input, and providing updates to department.
  14. Acts as a resource person to staff, students and volunteers for issues related to music therapy by methods such as providing information and answering questions.
  15. Instructs staff and family on individual client/resident care plans as the appropriate use of recorded music, resident music preferences, and creating an environment related to sound appropriateness for dementia care.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience
Baccalaureate degree in Music Therapy from a recognized educational institution plus two years' recent, related experience in Music Therapy, working with frail seniors.

Eligible for accreditation with the Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT).


Skills and Abilities

  • Current knowledge of developments in music therapy and residential care.
  • Ability to function effectively as an interdisciplinary team member.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to teach and organize work.
  • Ability to play a minimum of two musical instruments, piano and/or guitar and voice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the use of a variety of musical instruments and related equipment.
  • Ability to articulate philosophy, style, approach and benefits of music therapy in a residential care setting.
  • Ability to apply music therapy methods, systems and techniques to residential care residents.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
