Detailed Overview

The Dietitian within the Fraser South Eating Disorder Program (FSEDP) is a member of an interdisciplinary team providing nutrition consultation to community members, agencies and other health professionals. The Dietitian develops, coordinates and presents relevant educational material for diverse populations and provides nutritional counselling and client-centered individual, family and group counselling to child, youth and adult client within the program.

The Dietitian collaborates with other health professionals to monitor and evaluate provision of service and make recommendations regarding the nutritional component of the Eating Disorder Program and related goals, objectives, standards and procedures.


Responsibilities

  1. Provides nutrition education and consultation to clients, caregivers, and interdisciplinary team members by developing, coordinating, and presenting education and education materials to specified target groups, promoting the role of nutrition in health and health care to mental health staff, other health professionals, and the public through in-services, educational presentations and local media.
  2. Provides evidence-based comprehensive individual nutritional assessment, which includes a history of the eating disorder and current eating disorder behaviors, including binge/purging, restrictive eating patterns and exercise practices. Provides nutritional care plans for both community and inpatient clients of the Fraser South Health Area which includes pre-care, meal planning and nutritional counselling, as appropriate.
  3. Provides assessment, nutritional counselling and therapeutic counselling around readiness and motivation status of client to ensure appropriate treatment match to client's psychological readiness. Structures nutritional counselling for all levels of care, including high risk clients, using motivational strategies in both individual and group settings.
  4. Acts as a resource to regional, departmental, community resources/agencies and educational institutions, on nutrition and nutrition programming, to meet the needs of child, youth and adult populations with respect to eating disorders treatment and prevention.
  5. Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team and client in care planning, monitoring treatment progress and evaluating treatment outcomes especially in regards to the nutritional component of care.
  6. Provides individual and group sessions related to identifying nutritional goals such as grocery shopping, meal preparation, restaurant eating, and menu planning, and liaises with the interdisciplinary team related to same.
  7. Participates in planning and facilitating groups with the clients in the FSEDP, in conjunction with the Case Manager and Coordinator.
  8. Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team by participating in intake duties and attending team rounds/conference to exchange information on client responses or issues related to the care plan.
  9. Participates in the development of the goals, objectives, standards and procedures of the overall Nutrition Program.
  10. Provides home visits as required, dependent on the program the dietician is working in, to assist the client in achieving nutritional goals such as meal planning and preparation. Works with families and partners as is appropriate in this setting.
  11. Maintains related reports, records, and statistical data, in accordance with established standards and procedures.
  12. Participates in quality improvement activities and research by identifying care issues, collecting data and preparing statistics such as workload indicators; prepares reports, as required.
  13. Supervises and/or supports dietetic interns as required and provides nutrition education and/or support to other health care students.
  14. Participates in program meetings by contributing information on program status or issues related to Nutrition Services.
  15. Liaises with Fraser South Hospitals and Community Departments and represents the department on task groups and internal and external committees such as the Provincial Eating Disorder Committee and the Network of Eating Disorder Therapist's as required.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition from an accredited university, successful completion of a community nutrition or dietetics internship program as approved by Dietitians of Canada (DOC) and two (2) years' recent related experience including a focus on client-centered counselling of eating disordered clients, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Registration with the College of Dietitians of British Columbia. Valid BC Driver's license and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes.

  • Demonstrated ability to proactively and effectively resolve issues impacting on quality and continuity of care.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in high volume/high stress environment with strong conflict resolution and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to plan, implement, organize, prioritize and problem-solve.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to write grant proposals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health practitioners, as well as clients, the general public and local media.
