Description

Youth & Food Bank Coordinator provides wholistic care (physical, emotional, and spiritual) to Gitxsan Lax'Yip (Gitxsan nation) through integrated ministry of guests of the food bank and youth of the community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Youth Coordinator:

  • Oversee and coordinate Gitxsan youth discipleship preparing curriculum, involving volunteers, and providing resources for activities as required.
  • Plan and conduct community outreach activities.
  • Identify avenues for linking children served through food bank with church programs.
  • Incorporate appropriate Christian practices into all programs, providing opportunities for spiritual and cultural exploration/discussion that is age appropriate.
  • Support and pray with children and parents/guardians as needed.
  • Pray for the youth of Cascade on a regular basis.
  • Recruit, screen, orient, and train volunteer leaders.
  • Track and report statistics of all youth activities for SAMIS.

Community & Family Services:

  • Conducts initial intake assessments determining immediate needs and supports needed by the guest.
  • Provides emergency assistance services or referrals (i.e., shelter, clothing etc.) in accordance with policy.
  • Prepares and meets with guests to distribute food hampers and other items as required.
  • Prepares and submits reports and program evaluations as required.
  • Provides direction for volunteers.
  • Ensures adherence to Food Banks BC/Canada standards.
  • Records and reports statistics via electronic databases. (SharePoint, Link2Feed, Client Management Systems, Logbooks, Excel, etc.)
  • Audits logbook notes alongside the statistical reporting page to ensure statistical accuracy, notify the Community Ministries Supervisor of operational trends and make necessary recommendations.
  • Assists in completing kitchen and janitorial inventory and reports information to Head Cook and Community Ministries Supervisor.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
  • Receives (and/or declines) and sorts/organizes non-monetary donations according to Food Safety regulations.
  • May have to arrange to discard items that are not usable in accordance with policy.
  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace, including the intake office and food storage room.
  • Maintains confidentiality with all guests and donor records.
  • May assist by thanking donors and providing written receipts and thank you cards or letters for all donations as appropriate.
  • Ensures all contact with donors, staff, volunteers, and the general public are courteous and professional.
  • Always treat guests and co-workers with respect and dignity.
  • Networks and refers to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of guests and programs when necessary.
  • Ensures proper safety precautions and hygiene standards are followed, including Universal Precautions.
  • May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all safety procedures.
  • Ensures proper lifting, twisting & reaching techniques are used during job performance.

Hours: 40 hrs/wk

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of two academic years.
  • Youth leadership training and/or Biblical studies are required.
  • Alternative combination of education and experience might be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • A minimum of one (1) year prior related experience, including experience working with children and youth.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driver's abstract.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Some theological or ministry-related training and education relating to the position.
  • Has a strong, mature, personal Christian commitment that is able lead and teach from the Bible and the doctrines of the Salvation Army.
  • A continuous desire to keep learning to become a more effective church leader.
  • Good understanding of family system dynamics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others in a team setting.
  • A self-starter, creative and innovative. Able to be proactive in strategic planning and implementation.
  • Good administrative, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Good supervisory, delegation and development skills.
  • Good computer skills; literate with MS Office
  • Must be willing to undergo an enhanced criminal record check and obtain internal Salvation Army child abuse registry clearance.
  • The ability to work in an environment of confidentiality and change.
  • The understanding that this is a ministry position and as such must be willing to work a flexible schedule.
  • The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of computer work, occasionally lifting/moving equipment, loading/unloading trucks (emergency disaster response), performing walkabouts.
  • The Incumbent is required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • The performance of the job requires attentive listening (empathy to guests/volunteers/co-workers) and the ability to give directions.
  • Requires monitoring of the environment, security cameras and attentiveness when interacting with guests.
  • Good team and interpersonal skills.
  • Good computer skills and organizational skills.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English and Gitxsan is an asset.
  • Willingness and ability to complete training as required by contract or The Salvation Army.
  • Willingness and ability to complete WHMIS & Universal Precautions training (to be completed during probation period).
  • Willingness and ability to complete online new hire health and safety training (to be completed during probation period).

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  • A clean drivers abstract.
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
