Description

Hours:

  • 40 hours per week (Temporary Contract)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts initial intake assessments (including evaluation of client/family protection issues), determining immediate needs and supports needed by the client
  • Provides spiritual guidance and uses every opportunity to pray with and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with guests and program participants/families, enabling them to become part of the Body of Christ
  • Through exercising empathetic care, assists individuals to determine an appropriate and mutually agreed upon goal process; facilitates effective problem-solving behaviours of the client/family
  • Provides emergency assistance services (i.e. housing, shelter, food, clothing, etc.) in accordance with policy
  • Maintains confidentiality and keeps accurate client files and statistics using The Salvation Amy's programs and systems
  • May provide budgeting guidance
  • Assists in the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the Food Bank, Meal Community Services Centre, etc.
  • Receives (and/or declines) and sorts/organizes non-monetary donations
  • Networks and refers to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of guests and program participants and program, when necessary
  • Develop and conduct workshops for clients/families, as appropriate as well as the development and oversight of community-based programs.
  • May direct and supervise volunteers, which include recruitment, selection, orientation, training, evaluation, and discipline
  • Provides input into the operational budget; may be responsible for cash management
  • May organize seasonal or special programs (i.e. Christmas Hamper, Toy Distribution, Summer Camps, Food Drives, Community Dinners, etc.)
  • Effectively maintain records to accurately reflect services rendered using all appropriate forms, including detailed accurate case notes for every
  • Ensure accurate and timely collection and maintenance of data, submit monthly summary of service statistics to the PoH (Pathway of Hope) Coordinator, and assist in semi-annual evaluation/outcome measurements
  • Performs other duties as assigned

NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Completion of a two (2) year Community College Diploma in a human services field, i.e. Social Services Worker.
  • A University Degree in a relevant field of study would be a definite asset, i.e. Bachelor of Social Work, or a Bachelor of Arts in Social Services).
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in all aspects of Microsoft Office.

  • Keen sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.

  • Participant centered - willingness to listen and learn from each participant with compassion and dignity.
  • Organizational commitment - understanding and ability to uphold the ethical and social norms of the organization.
  • Communication - strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening as required.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Ability and willingness to provide First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certifications.
