Detailed Overview

Performs electrical, plumbing and carpentry repair and maintenance duties. Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on buildings and equipment. Performs groundskeeping duties, as required.


Responsibilities

  1. Performs electrical repair and maintenance duties such as installing and replacing ballasts, receptacles and switches/circuits, replacing electric light bulbs/fluorescent tubes, switches, plugs and extension cords. Cleans and lubricates motors.
  2. Identifies nature of equipment problems; performs preventative maintenance on equipment such as wheelchairs, beds, stretchers, carts and engines by cleaning, greasing, lubricating and replacing broken or worn parts such as castors, filters and hydraulic cylinders; performs mechanical repair and preventative maintenance such as cleaning, oiling/greasing and replacing parts on motors; performs preventative maintenance to washers, dryers and ice machines, including cleaning, oiling/greasing and replacing parts such as filters and belts.
  3. Performs carpentry repair and maintenance such as repairing walls, ceilings, doors, replacing carpet or linoleum, putting up chair rails, replacing mouldings and baseboards, replacing hardware on furniture, attaching noticeboards/pictures to walls and replacing locks; mixes and applies building materials such as concrete and plaster; recaulks window glazing and roof flashings; constructs items such as shelves, keyboard trays and applies laminate to counter surfaces.
  4. Performs painting and maintenance such as preparing surfaces prior to painting and applying finishes including paint, varnish or wallcoverings.
  5. Performs plumbing repair and maintenance such as repairing or replacing plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, flush tank mechanisms, faucets, unblocking sewer lines.
  6. Performs clean-up duties including wiping down machinery, sweeping and mopping work areas.
  7. Replaces fan filters in mechanical rooms and cleans fan intakes.
  8. Exchanges medical gas cylinders as required.
  9. Performs grounds maintenance using equipment such as a power mower; digs holes; prunes and provides basic care of shrubs and trees as directed; picks up garbage; cleans roofs, gutters and drains.
  10. Assists in maintaining grounds and parking lots in winter by removing snow and ice; operates tractor and applies salt and sand to sidewalks and roadways.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 10 plus two years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
