Description

The Shelter Support Worker ensures a healthy and safe environment for clients/guests. Additionally, the incumbent may provide emotional support and crisis intervention.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor the activities of guests and be available for personal, practical, and moral support.
  • Accurately record day-to-day happenings/incidents using established methods.
  • Assist guests in accessing clean/dry clothing and laundry services.
  • Coordinate guest care as it relates to security issues.
  • Carry out inspections.
  • Serve meals/snacks/beverages.
  • Perform janitorial duties of the facility as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Please Note: Due to the nature of a low-barrier shelter, applicants should be aware that they will be working with intoxicated individuals.

HOURS: 32 hours per week. (Monday - Thursday) (8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.)

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Completed grade 12 high school diploma.
  • Food Safe Level 1 or willingness to obtain.
  • CPR First Aid ©, or willingness to obtain.
  • WHMIS Training & Universal Precautions Training
  • Note: an alternative level of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • A heart for people, empathy for those in need, and compassion for individuals struggling with addictions, dealing with mental health barriers, the street entrenched, and the marginalized.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

Completion of a formal post-secondary/college diploma program of 1-2 academic years in a related field (e.g., Social Service Work, Mental Health & Addictions, etc.) is a strong asset.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.
  • A clean drivers abstract.
  • Completion of our online Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
