Job Summary
This position will work in collaboration with laboratory science programs in School of Health Sciences (SoHS). Under the direction of the Dean and/or Associate Dean, this position will set annual priorities for meeting the various and emerging needs of School of Health Sciences. Time allotted per program will vary throughout the year and will be determined prior to the beginning of each semester.
Specific Duties
• Provides general operation and maintenance support to the program
• Utilizes timetables, course syllabuses and lab manuals along with initiative to prepare, set out and dismantle teaching supplies and equipment, which will assist in meeting program outcomes
• Maintains laboratory, equipment and work areas in a clean, workable and safe conditions
• Assists instructors in the demonstration of instructional equipment, processes and procedures during instructional lab periods. May be required to explain principles and operation of equipment and instruments, etcetera to students; guide students in regards to consequences of negative outcomes of laboratory procedures.
• Makes minor repairs to equipment and instruments. Arranges for major repairs and preventive maintenance with companies as required.
• Assists senior laboratory technologist with orders of supplies and expendable items for utilization in the laboratory; maintains inventory control and records.
• Assess & identify the need for new equipment or capital supplies prior to budget preparation each year, and submit business case(s) to Associate Dean.
• May assess and calibrate education equipment and instruments to manufacturers' standards and compliance with area specifications
• Perform quality control procedures.
• Prepare and maintain procedure manuals, slide inventory logbooks and maintenance logs for instruments and equipment to meet accreditation requirements.
• Assist in maintaining the quality of the slide collections.
• Monitor the equipment, prep and lab area for safety and general functioning.
• Ensure lab is compliant with current Biosafety and WHMIS regulations (WHMIS/GHS labelling, MSDS sheets, etc.) as required.
• Attend department and divisional meetings.
• Monitor and supervise students in daily quality control procedures of lab and for safety in the lab.
• Travel to local clinical site to collect samples for utilization in laboratory preparation.
• You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
• You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
• Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Skills & Qualifications
• Recognized two (2 ) year diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology Science.
• A trades or professional certificate, license, or membership required: Certified by, and a registered member in good standing with, the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
• 3 years or more Directly related recent work experience in the field.

• Experience working with the various instruments and in all 5 disciplines of the profession.
• Current CPR.
• Must have initiative and demonstrate organizational abilities, and work with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrate problem solving ability.
• Must have the ability to interact well with the faculty, students, other staff of the department and division as well as outside people and organizations.
WHIMIS and Transportation of Dangerous goods certification.
• Good oral, written and electronic communications skills.
• Attention to detail and proper documentation
• Ability to set priorities, work under pressure
• Physical ability to complete the job.
