Job Summary

The Division of Interventional Cardiology at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH), part of the greater Fraser Health Authority (FHA) Regional Department of Cardiac Services, is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and results-driven Co-Regional Division Head to build, grow, and lead a team of interventional cardiologists and to operationalize two new catheterization laboratories located at SMH. The successful candidate will join the largest Health Authority in the province and operate out of the site with the busiest emergency department in the country. Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) plans to appoint the Co-Regional Division Head before the lab becomes operational to ensure their involvement in its initial setup. SMH is currently constructing a dedicated cardiac catheterization facility. Cardiovascular surgery will be available for triage purposes from Monday to Friday, though no on-site surgical backup will be provided. Royal Columbian Hospital is nearby for cases requiring urgent surgical intervention. Stand-alone cardiac catheterization labs are a new concept in British Columbia. The previous stand-alone cardiac catheterization lab, located in Kelowna, has expanded into a full-service cardiac facility.

Key Areas of Involvement:

In addition to those responsibilities defined in the Bylaws, responsibilities of the Regional Department Head include (but are not limited to):

Regional Coordination:

  • Developing annual operating objectives for the Regional Division.
  • Functioning as the channel of communication to and from the regional division to keep members of the regional division informed regarding Fraser Health (FH), Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC), departmental and divisional objectives, policies, and general activities.
  • Leading with the Regional Medical Director (RMD) strategic and operational planning, of the assigned Division across Fraser Health (FH).

Quality and Utilization Monitoring/Improvement:

  • Developing, along with the members of the regional division, the standards of clinical practice for the division and ensuring that the division members work within established standards.
  • Ensuring that programs for the continuing medical education of regional division members are established.
  • Establishing a quality assurance/quality improvement structure and program for the regional division, which carries out the functions of review, evaluation and analysis of the quality of Medical Care and utilization of FH resources.
  • Investigating complaints regarding care provided by medical staff within the regional division, under the direction of the Regional Department Head (RDH) and Local Department Head (LDH).

Divisional Operations:

  • Promoting health and wellness amongst Members.
  • Encouraging a healthy, and respectful workplace.
  • Arranges and chairs local and regional divisional meetings, as required.
  • Conveying the advice, opinions, and duly passed motions of regional division members to FH and the regional department, and relevant information from FH and the regional department to the members of the regional division.

SMH Operations (specific to hire as an interventional cardiologist- not specific to co-regional division head role)

  • Providing clinical service in outpatient clinics and potentially on inpatient units and will be responsible for performing invasive/interventional cardiovascular procedures, with an emphasis on diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization. Additionally, care will be provided for patients with STEMI, acute coronary syndromes, and cardiogenic shock. including participation in the STEMI call. Currently, Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) does not have a structural heart program.

Academic Affiliation:

  • Working with the University of British Columbia (UBC) to ensure that education programs and research activities are being sufficiently promoted and supported, if applicable.
  • Ensuring the medical staff academic activities, including education and research, are compliant with FH policies.

Regional Physician Resource Planning:

  • Reviewing the workforce requirements of the regional division in consultation with local and regional division members, the regional department, and/or the Regional Medical Director (RMD) and a plan for the local and regional division is recommended to the Medical Staff Human Resource Committee.
  • Contributing to the selection of new staff members joining the Regional Department

Dispute Resolution:

  • Mediating disputes involving division members.

Medical Legal Issues:

  • Identifying potential liability issues and legal problems within the division; and providing advice for specific cases/files to the LDH, RDH, RMD, and/or legal counsel as required.

Experience Required:

  • The candidate should have at least 5 years of independent practice as an interventional cardiologist.
  • Eligibility for appointment to the clinical faculty of the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University once established.
  • A demonstrated record of work in a 'stand alone' site (i.e. no CV surgery on site) is preferred.
  • Experience and interest in developing and leading clinical programs is preferred.

Role Commitment: This role includes a part-time appointment as Co-Regional Division Head and a full-time clinical position as an Interventional Cardiologist.
