Job Summary

Fraser Heath is seeking to fill a Regional Medical Staff Lead position which will oversee the medical components of the planetary health strategy ensuring the inclusion of environmental and social considerations to decision making/planning of clinical services. The role requires strong leadership and a commitment to planetary health. This position will play a pivotol role in developing planetary health familiarity and fluency in teams/clinicians across Fraser Health and supporting with expertise. The start date is November 20, 2024.

Reporting directly to Dr. Ingrid Tyler, Vice President and Chief Medical Health Officer – the responsibilities of this position include:

Clinical Leadership

Clinical Oversight:

  • The Lead acts as the primary liaison between key clinical stakeholders to establish climate change and health governance providing direction for all clinical aspects related to planetary health.
  • Ensure adherence to evidence-based practices and protocols in environmentally sustainable health care.

Quality Assurance:

  • Incorporate environmental metrics into quality and safety reporting, and establish environmentally sustainable procurement policies.
  • Ensure that all planetary health clinical interventions meet the highest standards of safety and efficacy.

Team Management:

  • The Lead will work with counterparts across portfolios, including in Medicine and Quality, Clinical Operations, Population Health, Energy & Environmental Sustainability and professional practice to establish the functional leadership structure to ensure consultation and collaboration with executive leadership, other key stakeholders, external agencies, and government as required to lead the implementation of the Fraser Health Planetary Health Strategy.
  • Co-facilitate with operations leadership regular team meetings to discuss initiatives, share knowledge, and promote continuous learning.

Training and Development

Training Programs:

  • Collaborate with operational leadership, develop and implement training programs for planetary health network champions and other clinical staff around planetary health.
  • Keep abreast of and educate team members on the latest advancements in environmentally sustainable clinical practices.

Partnerships:

  • Cultivate partnerships with sustainable health care organizations, and other healthcare providers to advance and embed sustainability into health care planning.

Research and Evaluation

Program Evaluation:

  • Co-lead with the ED of Planetary Health and Network Planetary Health champions on the development and execution of evaluation to identify environmental impacts (and other co-benefits such as cost savings, efficiency improvements).
  • Use data-driven insights to inform service delivery and quality improvement initiatives.

Research Contributions:

  • Engage in research activities related to environmentally sustainable health care.
  • Consult with academic and clinical leadership with respect to supporting teaching and research around planetary health.
  • Publish/present findings and represent Fraser Health planetary health at conferences and professional gatherings.

Administrative Duties

Policy Development:

  • Participate in updates of Decision Support Tools including planetary health criteria.
  • Ensure all clinical activities are compliant with health authority regulations and standards.

Reporting:

  • Assist in the preparation of reports on program activities, outcomes, and strategic developments for stakeholders and funding bodies.

Liaison Work:

  • Act as a key liaison between the Planetary Health Steering Committee/Team and the broader medical staff community.

Deliverables

Program Report:

  • Detailing clinical outcomes, operational challenges, and strategic initiatives to demonstrate Fraser Health leadership in sustainable health care.

Quality Improvement Plan:

  • Developed, with measurable targets and outcomes.

Clinical Protocols and Guidelines/Decision Support Tools:

  • Regular updates to ensure current and best practice.

Training Curriculum:

  • Development and ongoing refinement of educational materials and training modules targeted to clinicians/teams.

Research Publications:

  • Contribution to academic and professional resources through research.

Recruitment will proceed as per the FHA Medical Staff Bylaws. This position is 0.2 Full Time Equivalent.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have:

  • Valid licensure to practice medicine in British Columbia, Canada.
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience, with a strong background in clinical sustainability and quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience within a healthcare setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and breadth of internal and external stakeholders.
  • By fulfilling these responsibilities and deliverables, the Regional Medical Staff Lead will ensure the integration of planetary health into health care decision making and support innovation across Fraser Health.
