Detailed Overview

Under the general supervision of an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist and Recreation Therapist provides routine training to patient(s) on activities of daily living, carries out recreation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy programs, prepares and applies treatment modalities, prepares equipment for use by the therapist, and maintains inventory of equipment.
Responsibilities

  1. Within an assigned area provides routine instruction to patient(s) on activities of daily living such as: toileting; transfers; dressing/undressing; donning/doffing prostheses/orthoses; washing; bathing and assisting where necessary.
  2. Carries out established recreation participation programs such as crafts, bingo, community news and maintains the patient environment.
  3. Prepares and applies treatment modalities such as ice, heat, cryocuff, whirlpool and wax; supervises established exercise programs; performs passive and active assisted range of motion exercises and assists with walking following established policies and procedures.
  4. Provides direction to volunteers during recreation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy programs and demonstrates related techniques as required.
  5. Assists with or conducts group activities established by physiotherapy, occupational therapy or recreation therapy.
  6. Provides input into the planning, implementation and evaluation of program modifications or proposed new programs.
  7. Reports patient's performance and response in programs to the appropriate therapist.
  8. Prepares equipment for use by therapist. Assists in fabrication of adaptive equipment, splints as directed. Cleans all equipment according to procedure and schedule requirements and maintains the general tidiness of the department. Reports all malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate therapist.
  9. Maintains the inventory of the equipment, devices and materials and monitors lending and returning of patient equipment. Maintains inventory of general department supplies and prepares supply requisitions for signature as required.
  10. Maintains statistical data as required.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Completion of a recognized Rehabilitation Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Ability to organize work and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
