The Research and Implementation Scientist acts in accordance with the research priorities of Fraser Health to build and increase research capacity and support evidence-based quality care by consulting to internal clients regarding the development of research, evaluation and quality improvement studies for Fraser Health employees and physicians. Provides research methodological consultation, advisement, or development support and, utilizing a learning health system approach, enables a rapid learning in the system by aligning multiple approaches such as research, quality improvement, evaluation and the ongoing integration of new diagnostic and care innovations.
Responsibilities
- Provides research methodological consultation to Fraser Health employees and physicians by developing and/or supporting the development of research project/protocol including research questions, study design, sample size, sampling, randomization and data analysis plans
- Provides knowledge dissemination support by reviewing and/or writing reports on behalf of clients and reviewing manuscripts.
- Provides statistical analysis services to FH researchers including development of statistical plan, sample size calculation, data base design, data analysis and interpretation.
- Develops standardized methodologies for longitudinal epidemiological studies and randomized controlled trials and other types of research designs.
- Supports the development of evaluation and quality improvement projects for business purposes in consultation with clinicians and decision makers by developing appropriate data collection designs, analysis plans, and conducting statistical analyses.
- Reviews research studies to ensure compliance with Fraser Health''s Agreement on the Administration of Agency Grants and Awards by Research Institutions with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Tri-Council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans in order to support the FH Research Ethics Board (REB) approval of ethically and scientifically sound research to protect human participants.
- Contributes to the Department of Evaluation and Research Services (DERS) education program by developing and facilitating workshops designed to provide a strong foundation for the development of skills required for research, evaluation and quality improvement.
- Develops strategies to train and support clinicians, leaders, patients/communities to assess and apply evidence and knowledge in support of health service delivery quality, efficiency and improvement of health outcomes, experience and sustainability of the health system.
- Supports researchers, evaluators and innovators to generate knowledge from data and drive practice change aimed at improving outcomes over time and sharing learning locally and more broadly.
- Creates and adapts processes, policies and working practices supportive of learning health system development and facilitates the set up and coordination of concurrent research, quality improvement and evaluation initiatives.
- Creates efficiency approaches to measure and report on impact including return on investment associated with innovation, knowledge translation, quality improvement and research activities.
- Supports innovation in the development of scientific research protocols and identifies opportunities for further collaboration with internal and external research groups by acting as Scientific Monitor for the internal research award competitions and scientific advisor/co-investigator/collaborator on funded studies within Fraser Health.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Ph.D in Epidemiology, Statistics or related field focused on research methodologies and statistics. Five (5) to seven (7) years of related experience in quantitative research methods and statistics, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

- Comprehensive knowledge of research and methodologies, quality improvement, program/project evaluation principles and metrics, implementation science, research ethics, and regulations and practice.
- Advanced skills in research design and the analysis of quantitative data.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, processes, procedures and methods involved in data analysis and statistical methods.
- Demonstrated expertise in planning, organizing and coordinating research activities.
- Demonstrated proficiency with using advanced statistics, statistical software packages and manipulation of large datasets.
- Demonstrated expertise in knowledge synthesis and translation activities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including ability to communicate effectively with people in all levels of health care, academia, and patients and families.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
- Functional competence with database software (REDCap), analytical software/graphics programs (e.g. SPSS, nVIVO), MS Office suite and familiarity with a range of population, resource and library databases.
