Job Summary

This position will assist faculty members and graduate students at chair side with a specific focus on supporting the Pediatric and Orthodontic programs.

The primary responsibilities of this role include assisting with four handed chair side within the Graduate Orthodontic and Graduate Pediatric programs.

Organizational Status
This position- Dental Assistant 3 would report to Dental Assistant IV, who reports to the Clinic Director, who reports to the Dean.


Work Performed

Setting-up armamentarium; assisting with routine and advanced procedures in the Graduate Orthodontics and Pediatric Programs.

Assisting faculty members and graduate students at chair side. Setting up instruments and equipment for dental procedures. Tasks include placing cement on brackets and passing them to students.

Supervises and coordinates the work of lower classification level of Dental Assistants as required. Be able to effectively delegate tasks to ensure the efficient flow of the programs.

Maintaining inventory of supplies and materials. Maintain Student Instrument Accounts. Assist with student orientation. Maintain lists and photos for grad program instruments.

Informing faculty, patients and students of existing protocols and procedures.

Processing, sterilizing and packaging instruments in CSD/ CSDR as required.

Cleaning cubicles, dispensaries, and lab areas.

Must be flexible in terms of performing other related tasks as operationally required.

Working Conditions

Would work in the main clinic.

Reaching high cupboards, pushing instrument trolleys. Ability to be on your feet all day.

Work around sink area, sterilizers and ultrasonic units.

Lighting is good; floor is concrete, some anti-fatigue matting throughout.

Hazards- instrument cassettes are heavy, lifting of cassettes involved, and loading and unloading of trolleys. Very hot temperatures in the sterilizers, proper mitts to be worn when unloading. Disinfection solutions are varied- phenol, glutaraldehyde, isopropyl alcohol- gloves to be worn.
Handling of used instrument cassettes could be hazardous.

Ability to follow all safety recommendations and protocols to reduce workplace related injuries.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work would be verified by a Dental Assistant IV.
If an error occurred, possible damage to handpieces, instruments and equipment. If incorrect decisions were made it would impact on the clinic functioning properly the next day. Proper sterilization and disinfection is vital to patient care and student curriculum requirements.


Supervision Received

Would be supervised by a team of Dental Assistant IV s.

Supervision Given
Supervises Dental Assistant II s and Tech II s.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation plus completion of a recognized dental assistant program, B.C. Dental assistant certification and current BC licence and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Supervisory experience is required. Knowledge of basic dental/restoration instruments and procedures is required.

Perform four handed dentistry with restoration with children is required.

Completion of the orthodontic module as offered by UBC Continuing Dental Education is required.

IV sedation certificate required. Must hold, or be willing to obtain the CDAAC sedation certificate.

Ability to use active restraint for children if urgently needed.

Proficient in taking Panoramic, Ceph and processing X-rays.

Preferred Qualifications

B.C. Dental Assistant Certification and a current licence is required. High School graduation and completion of a recognized dental assistant program. 4 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience and knowledge of orthodontic, pedodontic procedures and materials.

Experience in chairside dental assisting required.

Must be comfortable with full time chairside assisting within both programs as some days will include morning and afternoon assisting. Must be flexible to assist as operationally required.

Ability to take direction from DA4, lead DA3 and Instructors.

Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.

Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to effectively use Microsoft office at a basic level.

Ability to take or modify break times to meet operational needs.

Outlook. MS Word, MS Excel. Ability to identify and respond to contentious or sensitive issues with discretion.
