Compensation Range

Job Summary

The BC Primary Health Care Research Network (BC-PHCRN) is one network node of the Canadian Primary Care Research Network (CPCRN) meant to support evidence-informed transformation of the delivery of primary and integrated health care specifically in BC. The goal of the network is to encourage, facilitate, and support collaborations between government, health authorities, health professionals, patients and researchers in the area of primary care research

The BC-PHCRN Data Quality Coordinator supports research projects by monitoring and working directly with de-identified electronic medical record data in a health research setting. The Data Quality Coordinator will interpret extracted health data, frequently review data quality, identify causes of poor data outputs, and develop feedback reports for the BC-PHCRN research team and individual physician offices. Ability to multi-task and excellent interpersonal skills required.


Organizational Status
Reporting to Drs. Sabrina Wong and Rubee Dev of the BC PHCRN, the Data Quality Coordinator will collaborate with the Information and Technology Manager, as well as work closely with the director of the pan-Canadian EMR repository, Dr. Ayat Salman. The Data Quality Coordinator will also work collaboratively with other data managers and research assistants across the Network to communicate and troubleshoot data quality issues, and participate in regular teleconferences and face-to-face meetings.

Work Performed

  • Supports the provincial BC-PHCRN research team and pan-Canadian team with programming to monitor, extract, and report on data, for various health research projects, reports and publications.
  • Informs the research process, providing knowledge of the database and data.
  • Using primary care EMR data, develops reporting templates for longitudinal surveillance
  • Supports with data management strategies, including assessing the integrity of the data, ensuring quality control and completeness, with supervision.
  • Maintains data dictionary documentation.
  • Implements, tests, and evaluates Extract Transform Load (ETL) processes to ensure data are being stored properly, with supervision.
  • Enforces standards regarding project initiation, compliance with policies and procedures, DCPs, coding, documentation, project closure and other standards and practices.
  • Performs other tasks and responsibilities as required in support of the unit or department within scope of this position


Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position requires high degree of accuracy and discretion. The Data Quality Coordinator will be working with sensitive personal health information, so any errors and or inappropriate judgment could jeopardize the research project, reputation of the research team, Centre and the University as a whole.

Supervision Received
Works under general direction within established policies, procedures and standards. Work reviewed against task objectives and conformity to standards

Supervision Given
The Data Quality Coordinator will not oversee other staff members.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Epidemiology or Computer Science with statistical background preferred.
  • Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the use of EMR data in health services research considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of applicable privacy confidentiality policies and laws regarding the collection and use of health information for the purpose of research is considered an asset.
  • Experience and ability to work with programming language and software tools (e.g., R, Python, SQL).
  • Experience utilizing GPU technology and user-experience Design is preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare or health research settings, and familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.
  • Experience creating data visualizations is preferred.
  • Highly proficient in the use of MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and outlook)
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a research team.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills, attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated initiative and decision-making abilities; demonstrated ability to problem solve and function independently.
  • Ability to respond to changing project/organizational/external environment needs including evolving technology, data privacy, security, and risk management imperatives.
