Job Summary

This position is expected to be filled by promotion/reassignment and is included here to inform you of its vacancy at the University.

The Research Assistant will play a key role in the analysis of images obtained through Opto-Electronic Plethysmography (OEP), a non-invasive technique for measuring the chest wall's volume and thoraco-abdominal compartments. This tool is used in respiratory research for assessing breathing patterns, lung function, and thoraco-abdominal movements. The research assistant will ensure accurate data processing and interpretation to contribute to advancing the research team's scientific understanding.



Organizational Status
Position reports to PI and may supervise students.

Work Performed

  • Conduct frame-by-frame analysis and tracking of raw OEP data files, ensuring precise measurements.
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and secure data management practices, adhering strictly to ethical guidelines as outlined by TCPS 2: Core.
  • Regularly communicate with the primary investigator and co-investigators regarding findings, trends, and any anomalies observed during analysis.
  • Diligently perform data filtration and cleaning processes to remove noise, errors, or outliers, ensuring high quality dataset for interpretation.
  • Supervise and coordinate a team of undergraduate volunteers assisting with data analysis, providing clear guidance and support.
  • Provide technical training on OEP analysis to new team members.



Consequence of Error/Judgement
The quality of the overall research, the research team's communication, and the performance of Research Assistants and other staff will be affected.

Supervision Received
The Research Assistant will work independently under the supervision of the Principle Investigator.

Supervision Given
The Research Coordinator may supervise other students.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful completion of the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS 2): Core Ethical Research Certification.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in human anatomy, respiratory mechanics and exercise physiology.
  • Experience with OEP systems or similar motion capture technologies is preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in advanced computer systems, data processing software, and data visualization tools.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical skills.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills, with the ability to collaborate.
