Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Genome Maintenance and Cancer Biology

One full-time postdoctoral position is available immediately in the lab of Judy Wong at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada).

Dr. Wong leads the Faculty's Molecular and Systems Pharmacology Research and Training Program, with cross-appointments to UBC Faculty of Medicine's Department of Medical Genetics, and to the BC Cancer's Department of Experimental Therapeutics. Research in the Wong Laboratory focuses on the different mechanisms responsible for the gross structural maintenance of the genome, including the roles of telomeres and telomerase in preventing chromosome erosion, and their interactions with cellular pathways that respond to DNA damage. The laboratory also has a separate line of investigation on G-quadruplex in the genome and the transcriptome, with parallel studies on the biological effects and the therapeutic utilities of G-quadruplex stabilization in human disease models.

Trainees in the Wong lab are exposed to a rich training environment, and became experts in diverse disciplines including advanced genomic and bioinformatic technology, biochemical and protein engineering sciences, genetic and mechanism-based investigations of human diseases, drug discovery and screening technologies. Trainees from the Wong lab are highly competitive for careers in biomedical sciences, including appointments in innovative biotechnology companies, with clinical investigative teams and in academia.

Qualifications:

  • Recently graduated with a PhD in a related discipline

  • Have published peer-reviewed articles as first author

  • Have excellent written and communication skills

  • Be self-motivated and interested in research and scientific innovations

  • Preference will be given to those who have experience in genome analyses, mammalian cell biology studies, biological and biochemical assay development, protein engineering and/or bioinformatic studies

Responsibilities:

  • Take the lead of a major project in the laboratory

  • Develop mammalian cell models and perform in vitro and ex vivo characterizations.

  • Lead organization and maintenance of the laboratory

  • Train and mentor junior laboratory members

  • Publish research results and assist in grant writings

  • Present findings at conferences, departmental and laboratory meetings

  • Teaching opportunity is available if interested

The contract term will be for one year, from which extension is possible.

The expected salary range is $45,000 - $60,000 CAD. Pay will be commensurate with level of experience and subject to UBC regulations for postdoctoral stipends.

Review of applications will start immediately, and will continue until the position is filled.
