Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Department of Nursing Unit Manager, the Charge Clerk will be responsible for a variety of clerical tasks including scheduling patients, answering telephones, receiving patients, and directing patients. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Charge Clerk contributes to the care and comfort of patients by providing physical assistance which may include lifting, transferring, and transporting patients. The position is responsible in the daily assignment scheduling of support staff in collaboration with the unit managers, other Charge Clerks and the Clinical Resource Nurse(s). The Charge Clerk provides leadership in acting as a clinical resource and role model, using his/her clinical expertise to guide, train, and mentor staff to promote best practice and patient safety.

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a Unit Clerk and Unit Assistant and/ or Nursing Assistant or equivalent
  • Successful completion of a recognized Nursing Assistant Course (Completion of Health Care Aide and Health Unit Clerk)
  • Grade XII, Manitoba Standard or equivalent
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks e.g. pushing carts with patient charts
  • Satisfactory employment record
  • Must be able to legally work in Canada

Will be assessed During the Interview Process:

  • Strong understanding and practice of patient centered care
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to effectively function in a stressful environment with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

Will be assessed During the Testing process:

  • Computer keyboarding skills of 30 wpm
  • Proficient medical terminology (70% pass rate)

Preferred

  • Previous experience in a leadership role, mentoring and training
  • Ability to speak French

Asset

  • Previous experience in patient care setting
  • Basic computer skills
