JOB SUMMARY

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, this position is responsible for the delivery of Siloam Mission's employment training program. Responsibilities include employment supervision, mentorship, and coaching to person's experiencing chronic or episodic homelessness. In addition to providing employment training services, the employment program coordinator position will be responsible for connecting with external employers and community organizations in order to create pathways of transition for participants.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide supportive, client focused employment mentorship to individuals experiencing homelessness;
  • Work alongside and provide constructive feedback for participants working in neighborhood cleanup, kitchen dish cleaning, and other programming tasks;
  • Develop individualized employment training pathways that help participants accomplish employment goals;
  • Foster an atmosphere of supportive learning where mistakes are seen as learning experiences;
  • Address conflict and/or problematic behavior directly and effectively;
  • Connect participants to community resources on a case by case basis;
  • Build relationships with local businesses to expand program partnerships;
  • Organize and deliver accurate records (timesheets, payroll, schedules, statistics etc.);
  • Perform other tasks that may be assigned by the Building Futures Manager;
  • Experience working in the field of employment coaching, teaching, or mentoring;
  • Experience supervising a team of diversely skilled individuals in a variety of work;
  • Good understanding of colonization and its impact on Indigenous peoples;
  • Knowledge of community resources for homelessness, health, mental health and substance use;
  • Good working knowledge of the employment resources available in the community;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique issues and barriers affecting those experiencing poverty and homelessness;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to form relationships with community members;
  • Highly developed understanding of and proven ability to communicate appropriate professional boundaries;
  • Ability to work from a trauma-informed perspective;
  • Ability to work within a harm-reduction framework;
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Certification in or demonstrated knowledge of NVCI, ASIST, Motivational Interviewing, Mental Health First Aid training (MHFA) is preferred;
  • WHIMIS & First Air CPR certification is an asset;
  • Basic understanding of general hand/power tools and equipment;
  • Proficiency in MS Office and database platform;
  • A forklift operator license is an asset;

  • Acts as a Liaison between Siloam Mission and external Sector Partners and Community Service Providers;
  • Works collaboratively with community partners and businesses
  • 40 hours per week;
  • Lifting of up to 50 lbs. + frequently;
  • Work requires standing and walking over extended periods of time;
  • Working in a warehouse setting;
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions will be required;
  • Will need to drive van occasionally;
  • Will need to clean (sweep, mop, disinfect, etc.) work areas as needed;
  • May handle dirty/soiled linen/laundry to be washed;
  • May be required to dispose of used sharps;
  • Hazardous conditions could potentially include unpredictable or risky behaviours from community members;
  • Must have a valid Class 5F driver's license, a clear driver abstract, a vehicle in good condition, and be willing to drive participants to appointments;

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

RELATIONSHIP

· Building professional relationships with participants;

· Liaise, advocate, collaborate and represent Siloam to other agencies within the sector;

· Work with other departments within Siloam Mission;

The incumbent contributes to making the organization safe for clients and staff and recognizes the importance of reporting unsafe situations and participating in follow up reviews as a learning opportunity.

  • Provides a safe environment by ensuring adherences to Workplace Safety and Health.
  • Regulations and Policies, Infection Control Guidelines, WHMIS and Safe Work Procedures. Immediately investigates and recommends corrective action on any unsafe acts, work conditions, incidents, near misses, injuries or illnesses.
  • Demonstrates understanding of role and responsibilities in fire prevention and disaster preparedness and participates in safety and health training programs including the facility's Fire, Disaster and Evacuation Plan.
