JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for others as well as working with and supervising volunteers and staff in the planning, preparation, service, and clean-up of nutritious meals. This will keep our clients in good physical health in order that they may progress, transition, and seek their highest potential.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prioritize, organize, and delegate tasks to volunteers;
  • Plan, prepare, and serve meals in a timely manner;
  • Ensure that proper sanitation, safety, and food regulations are followed;
  • Maintain cleanliness in the kitchen;
  • Receive donations of food items;
  • Maintain a zero-waste kitchen, minimizing waste as much as possible and using donations to their fullest potential;
  • Ensure kitchen staff and volunteers are following the City of Winnipeg health standards for meal preparation, kitchen cleanliness, and safety while providing nutritious meals in a timely manner to the community;
  • Exemplify Siloam's core values in all day-to-day activities;

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Safe Food Handling Certificate;
  • 1-year+ experience in a commercial kitchen environment;
  • Volunteer management experience is highly suggested;

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/BEHAVIORS

  • Safe Food Handling techniques;
  • Basic cooking techniques;
  • Cleaning procedures for utensils and equipment;
  • Ability to use Microsoft Outlook;
  • Be able to identify and cook with a variety of ingredients;
  • Basic knife skills;
  • Above average communication skills;
  • Work well in high-pressure situations;
  • Organized;
  • Creative and resourceful;
  • Compassionate and understanding;
  • Professional;

RELATIONSHIP

  • Works closely with Drop-In Staff, Volunteers, and Community Members from various departments of Siloam Mission.

WORKING CONDITION

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time;
  • Working with food allergens;
  • Working at least 16hours a week
  • Ability to lift and carry weight up to 50 lbs.;
  • Ability to work in a wide variety of temperature ranges;
  • Will need to clean (sweep, mop, disinfect, etc.) work areas as needed;
  • Ability to work with cleaning chemicals;
  • Hazardous conditions could potentially include unpredictable or risky behaviours from community members;

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY

The incumbent contributes to making the organization safe for clients and staff and recognizes the importance of reporting unsafe situations and participating in follow-up reviews as a learning opportunity.

  • Provides a safe environment by ensuring adherence to Workplace Safety and Health
  • Regulations and Policies, Infection Control Guidelines, WHMIS, and Safe Work Procedures. Immediately investigates and recommends corrective action on any unsafe acts, work conditions, incidents, near misses, injuries, or illnesses.
  • Demonstrates understanding of role and responsibilities in fire prevention and disaster preparedness and participates in safety and health training programs including the facility's Fire, Disaster, and Evacuation Plan.
  • Supports an environment that avoids, prevents, and corrects all activities or actions which may result in an adverse outcome in the delivery of services. Community Member safety is a standing item for all individual and departmental meetings.
