Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Manager Health Services, the Lead Hand is responsible for assisting in the organization and coordination of the workflow of the Perioperative Aides to ensure efficient utilization of resources. Carries out assigned Perioperative Aide functions by assisting the team in preparing the theater, equipment and patient for surgery and terminal cleaning of theater post operatively. Adheres to universal precautions in performing housekeeping functions related to the Operating Room (OR) environment, theaters and equipment. Understands, implements and adheres to special infection control precautions as directed. Transports patients and equipment and other items as directed.

Experience

  • Two years recent experience as a Perioperative Aide required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience with Anesthesia equipment an asset.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Minimum Grade 10 education, Manitoba standards, required.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Employer policy.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Health Care Aide course required.
  • On-the-job training includes: an understanding and application of safety principles to self, staff and patients; an understanding of aseptic techniques and surgical supplies as they apply to the operating room theaters. This training takes approximately 2 weeks and is based on the various job assignments including housekeeping, room clean-up, and patient care (i.e. transport, lifting, turning, assisting and positioning).

Qualifications and Skills

  • Excellent command of the English language (both oral and written).
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to put knowledge into practice.
  • Cooperative, alert, accept directions and able to function as a team member in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet the changing requirements of the unit.
  • Must be knowledgeable about physical surroundings and activity of unit in order to prioritize work.

Physical Requirements

  • Must have the physical ability to meet the demands of the job.
  • Exposure to body and blood borne organisms.
  • Position involves meticulous attention to detail; maintaining a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Must be able to: lift while in awkward positions, lift 15 kilograms and maneuver heavy weights, and lift and hold weight for extended periods of time.
  • Must be in good physical health, without limitations affecting standing, walking or lifting.
  • Must lift, assemble and move heavy equipment, e.g. orthopedic equipment. Must be versatile and rotate through all the assignments and assist with all the assignments.
  • Must be capable of working under pressure and performing a wide range of routine duties that may require independent action.
