Position Overview

Under the general supervision of the Manager Health Services, the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing professional registered nursing services for patients, including those with complex and unpredictable health needs. These services include independent nursing services, administration of prescribed medical treatments, a leadership role within the healthcare team, and facilitating coordination of patient care and discharge.

Demonstrates a commitment to the vision, values, goals, and objectives of the region/facility/unit.

Consistent with the principles of primary healthcare, provides access to first level basic healthcare within the scope of nursing practice for individuals, families, groups and communities. As a member of an interdisciplinary community area team, the MIIC Nurse 2 provides comprehensive healthcare with an emphasis on healthy living, illness prevention (primary and secondary), health education, chronic disease management, clinical intervention, and palliation. Develops and implements a health plan with clients and evaluates success in meeting this plan. Provides ongoing service coordination and links clients with resources.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of directly related experience in a primary healthcare, community health nursing, northern nursing, emergency/ urgent care nursing and/or ambulatory care nursing with an emphasis on primary care services (primary and secondary prevention, intervention, maintenance/support, and palliation).
  • Experience with mental health counselling would be beneficial.
  • A combination of other nursing experiences would be considered.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduate of an approved Registered Nursing education program required.
  • Successful completion of a relevant post-basic program may be required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certificate required.
  • Cultural Safety training preferred.
  • Mental Health First Aid preferred.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training preferred.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Certification in Diabetes or Asthma Education (or attained within 2 to 3 years of employment) preferred.
  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with Employer policy.
  • Possession of a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver's license.
  • ACLS level is preferred and will be provided by the employer. Certification must be acquired within one (1) year of start of employment.

  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Aboriginal language and/or knowledge in Aboriginal customs, traditions and values.
  • Knowledge of:
    • College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses.
    • Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses.
    • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
    • Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
    • Nursing care knowledge related to clinical area.
    • Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
    • Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team.
    • Principles of delegation.
  • Works within MHC's core values, philosophy, vision, CQI goals, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated clinical skill in physical examination and nursing intervention.
  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Proven commitment to and knowledge of primary care and community health.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge in Indigenous customs, traditions and values.

Physical Requirements

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort required.
  • Physically capable of performing duties related to position, including assisting clients with physical and mental challenges during clinic visits, lifting a variety of clinic equipment and teaching materials, and arranging meeting rooms for group teaching activities.
  • May be required to provide primary care nursing services in a variety of clinic settings, including a primary care clinic site, temporary clinics in community settings, the client's home, and/or within a private physician practice.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment.
