Job Summary

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and supported by the Director of Primary Care Programs. The Nine Circles Research Nurse participates in the Syphilis Point of Care test research project, funded through Public Health Agency of Canada involving the investigation of new testing modalities. The primary responsibility is to identify eligible candidates for the research study and administer the study. Nine Circles works to bring innovation to Manitoba to increase access to STBBI testing by working with individuals and communities who are at risk for HIV/STBBIs.

Working in a harm reduction service setting, the Research Nurse participates in the Syphilis Point of Care test research project, funded through Public Health Agency of Canada involving the investigation of new testing modalities. The Nurse will offer consent, screening, risk counseling evaluation, testing and possible treatment/follow-up and referral. The Research Nurse works independently to manage STBBI testing and treatment services within their scope of practice.

The position is a part-time term position, 46.5 hours per two-week period (including holiday pay hours). The regular workdays for this position will fall between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

The position is classified as MNU Nurse 2 (WCRHEO). A comprehensive benefit package is provided as per employee eligibility via HEB Manitoba.

Key Responsibilities

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Provider should be proficient in research and familiar with ethical frameworks in Manitoba
  • Assume primary responsibility for the preparation and implementation of clinical research protocols.
  • Ensure that the relevant research methodology is applied, and all research material is handled in accordance with established protocols, policies, and procedures
  • Document and maintain patient study notes, assessments, logs, charts, and histories on each patient as per protocol.
  • Coordinate the procurement of equipment, supplies and data collection forms and data entry
  • Troubleshoot problems at all stages of project development and implementation and assist with modifying protocols or project procedures to address challenges.
  • Interview patients and complete associated assessments including determining eligibility for participation in research studies.
  • Analyze and process information to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of patient management.
  • Provides screening, diagnostic, prophylactic or therapeutic services to clients in an effort to prevent and control STBBIs including HIV and to assess, treat and refer for related and other health conditions

Qualifications

Required Education, Certifications and Experience

  • A Nursing Diploma from a recognized university
  • Registered with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certificate
  • Registered Nurse Authorized Prescriber, RN(AP) designation in reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections and blood borne pathogens

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience. Preference will be given to those with clinical experience in fast paced and independent practice settings such as emergency departments, intensive care units and northern nursing stations
  • Previous experience in research of a clinical nature, including Institutional Review Board submissions, preferred
  • Expertise STBBI management
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in electronic medical records and working knowledge of medical charting systems and principles
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and inquiries
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information
  • Demonstrated computer competency and experience working with Microsoft 365
  • Ability to manage inter-personal conflict in a respectful manner
  • Requires the ability to prioritize demands in an ever-changing, dynamic environment with attention to detail and effective organizational skills
