Position Overview

Directly accountable to the Manager of Speech Language Pathology, the Speech Pathologist's responsibilities include serving as a Speech Language Pathologist in implementing a comprehensive assessment and treatment program for communicatively and swallowing impaired adults. Will be a member of interdisciplinary evaluation and treatment teams; instruct and supervise students; provide education to clients, family members, staff and the general public. Will participate in ongoing program development and non-patient care activities as outlined herein. Travel to other WRHA facilities and community sites is required

Performs all duties in accordance with established health and safety regulations/guidelines, policies and procedures (e.g. utilizing personal, protective equipment as per safe work procedures). Notifies their Manager or their designates (i.e. supervisors) of all occurrences, injuries illnesses or safety and health concerns which are likely to harm themselves, their co-workers, or any others who enter the premises.

Experience

  • Previous experience and background in dealing with geriatric and neurologically impaired adults.
  • Experience in differential diagnosis of neurologically based communication disorders.
  • Experience in assessment, treatment and/or management of dysphagia.
  • Experience in preparing and providing in-service training programs for professional and non-professional staff.
  • Experience in augmentative and alternative communication.
  • Experience in the assessment and management of neurogenic and functional voice disorders.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited/recognized university is required.
  • Training in dysphagia is required.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Must be registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Manitoba (CASLPM). Membership in other professional organizations is encouraged; for example, Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) or the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the WRHA policy.
  • A valid driver's license is required along with access to a personal vehicle.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrates knowledge and support of:
    • The vision, values, goals, and objectives of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and the Deer Lodge Centre.
    • The Deer Lodge Centre's Mission Statement, Residents Bill of Rights and Code of Conduct.
    • Personal Health Information Act, Protection of Persons in Care Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
    • Up-to-date knowledge of Speech-Language Pathology assessment and treatment of neurological communication disorders.
    • Current knowledge of assessment and treatment in the area of dysphagia.
    • Knowledge of workload measurement procedures.
    • Knowledge of research design.
  • Able to assume responsibility and operate effectively within a department with multiple specialty services.
  • Able to relate well to staff, clients and their families.
  • Able to develop and maintain effective working relationships within the Centre and the WRHA.
  • Able to operate independently outside of the Centre.
  • Able to provide instruction in the Centre and Region's in-service program.
  • Able to assist in planning, organizing and coordinating the operation of departmental and regional programs.
  • Able to supervise students.
  • Able to interact with professionals within Deer Lodge Centre, the WRHA PCH program and other WRHA facilities.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates sound professional judgement.
  • Displays discretion and empathy in dealing with clients, their families and staff.
  • Has an enthusiastic and positive attitude.
  • Shows reliability, initiative and courtesy.

Physical Requirements

  • May be required to work extended hours.
  • May involve exposure to disease, radiation, toxic materials, noise, allergens, etc.
  • May encounter aggressive and/or agitated patients/residents/staff/visitors.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
