Position Overview

Under the direction of the Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) Program Director and working within the Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Direction of the WRHA, the Infection Control Professional Clinical Team Leader performs all duties and functions outlined in the Infection Control Professional position description.

In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the Infection Control Professional position description, the Infection Control Professional Clinical Team Leader is also responsible for:

  • Overseeing the daily Infection Prevention and Control clinical service delivery and environment/ operational issues in a designated team to ensure optimum patient safety.
  • Providing guidance to Infection Prevention and Control staff within the designated team through clinical leadership, mentoring, supervision, education, evaluation and research.
  • Contributing to the delivery of quality Infection Prevention and Control services by examining, developing, refining and evaluating the body of knowledge and clinical practices and assisting in program planning, development and evaluation.
  • Assisting with performance appraisals and recruitment.
  • Liaising with site leadership within the designated site.

Experience

  • A minimum of four years clinical experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Previous work experience in the field of Infection Prevention and Control preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
  • Completion of an Infection Prevention and Control Course.
  • Infection Prevention and Control training.
  • Certification in Infection Control from Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Incorporated.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Current registration or eligibility for registration with CRNM required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • The mission, vision, values, and strategic direction of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA).
    • The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA).
    • The key roles and duties of the WRHA Infection Prevention and Control Program.
    • Infection Prevention and Control competencies.
    • Leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills.
    • Microbiology, infectious disease, epidemiology and biostatistics.
    • Organizational, time-management, interpersonal, critical thinking, clinical reasoning, conflict resolution, decision-making, and communication skills.
    • The principles of quality improvement, program development, and adult education.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Function collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Function in a self-directed, independent manner with minimal supervision.
    • Prioritize, interpret and respond appropriately to multiple concurrent activities.
    • Critically review, evaluate, and where appropriate, apply relevant Infection Prevention.
    • Control knowledge to practice.
    • Critically review literature.
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Delegate appropriately and monitor outcomes of delegation.
    • Attend to operations in a timely manner.
    • Respect/adhere to timelines.
    • Adapt readily to changing demands, situations, and best practice in the academic and clinical practice of Infection Prevention and Control.
    • Advanced knowledge of current infection prevention and control practices, teaching and learning processes, and other relevant areas such as microbiology, epidemiology and biostatistics.
    • Proficiency in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office.
    • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.

  • Must be able to concentrate over extended periods of time despite frequent interruptions.

  • Required to enter construction sites, plant maintenance, medical device reprocessing, laboratory, and other ancillary areas.
  • Required to work for extended periods of time on the computer (NOTE: computer and telephone use represent repetitive tasks).
  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to have dialogue via the phone for extended periods of time.
  • Travel throughout the WRHA will be required.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment.
