JOB PURPOSE

The Anesthesia Assistant is responsible for providing routine and specialized duties under the supervision of an anesthesiologist.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a graduate of an approved training program for Registered Respiratory Therapists or an approved program for Registered Nurses and must have successfully completed an approved Anesthesia Assistant's training program.
  • Must be licensed and a member in good standing of the New Brunswick Association of Respiratory Therapists or the New Brunswick Association of Registered Nurses.
  • Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Good work record.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Anesthesia Assistant is responsible for:

  • Assisting in the preparation of patients for surgery including preoperative assessments
  • Performing or assisting with airway maintenance including intubation
  • Inserting radial arterial lines and peripheral intravenous lines
  • Monitoring and documenting physiological status for patients receiving intravenous sedation, regional anesthesia or general anesthesia
  • Administering pharmacological agents, medications, fluids and blood products
  • Performing delegated functions under supervision of an anesthesiologist
