Working under the supervision of The Director of Care, Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse successful candidates will be exposed to a dynamic, resident-centered approach to care in a small Nursing Home. The Resident Attendant works collaboratively to support the residents in their activities of daily living.

The Salvation Army Lakeview Manor is a 50 bed, Level 3 Nursing Home, owned, operated and accredited by The Salvation Army and licensed by the provincial government. Lakeview Manor follows a resident-focused philosophy using a team approach to enhance the quality of life for each resident. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists directly in care by providing personal care and assistance in the activities of daily living to residents. Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team in providing resident-focused care.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Organizational Responsibilities:

- Communicates with residents, families, team members and health care professionals and/or other departments within the Nursing Home concerning residents' needs.

- Assists in orientation of new personnel and new residents/families.

- Utilizes Home's resources, such as supplies and equipment, economically and safely. Participates in the identification of equipment needs and equipment trials.

- Participates in unit/department meetings, such as multidisciplinary team and quality program, by providing information, attending meetings and by ensuring follow up of recommendations.

- Demonstrates knowledge of Lakeview Manor's philosophy, mission, policies and procedures, and conducts work in a manner consistent with this.

- Participates in the LVM continuous quality improvement initiatives to improve resident, staff, department, and facility performance outcomes.

- Develops and maintains good interpersonal and communication skills and utilizes these skills in work with residents, families, volunteers, visitors, and other staff.

- Participates in department meetings, attends in-service programs, staff and committee meetings.

Provision of Care Responsibilities:

Contributes to the resident's service plan through the performance of selected routine tasks and procedures as determined by the stability of the resident's condition and the predictability of the resident's responses.

Assessment:

- Contributes to the data collection during routine observations and interactions.

- Reports changes in the resident's condition and collects additional data, as directed by RN or supervisor.

- Collects specimen as directed.

Planning:

- Participates in planning care to organize clinical workload and sets priorities for carrying out assigned work.

- Collaborates with other team members.

Implementation:

- Participates in carrying out resident care plan and all assigned work.

- Assists the resident with activities of daily living according to individual needs.

- Assists residents at meal time including tray set-ups, feeding and supervision of residents; verifies individual diet guidelines are followed; monitors resident's food, fiber and fluid intake; prepares and distributes resident snacks.

- Supports and promotes resident independence, safety, dignity and comfort.

- Assists residents with mobilization, range of motion and exercises; transfers residents and positions residents using proper body mechanics and equipment, such as mechanical lifts and transfer belts.

- Transports residents to and from in-house activities.

- Obtains and records resident weight.

- Responds to resident's call bells.

- Applies basic interventions within established delegation.

- Administers procedures and treatments as directed.

- Performs the following in collaboration with Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse:

  • Applies simple dressings, creams, and ointments.
  • Provides palliative care to the residents and support to the families.
  • Monitors, documents and reports changes in resident's health, condition and/or behaviour.
  • Evaluates and maintains resident safety needs.

- Documents the residents' care and routine observations according to established guidelines (ex. Use of care flow sheets)

- Seeks guidance and direction when required in completion of daily assignment.

- Maintains a clean and tidy environment for resident such as cleaning tubs, bedpans, basins, urinals, and other resident equipment.

- Replenishes supplies such as incontinent products, laundry and linen carts.

- Assists residents with packing and unpacking of personal belongings upon admission and transfers.

- Assists in distribution of resident clothing.

- Collects garbage and dispose of waste.

Evaluation:

- Contributes to the evaluation of care by observing and reporting changes in the resident's condition to the RN on a daily basis, and at care conferences and multi-disciplinary reviews.

- Maintains resident confidentiality and respects the resident's right to privacy.

- Participates in providing emotional support to residents and families.

- Reinforces appropriate health-related information to residents, families and other staff.

Operational Support:

- Receives and relays messages

- Moves and transfers resident when directed.

Individual Responsibilities:

- Maintains knowledge of, and applies, policies and procedures, such as the Fire and Disaster Plan, the Infection Control and Back in Form programs, and any other site programs.

- Practices safety and sanitation rules and regulations, and observes personal hygiene.

- Reports need of repairs to supervisor, or informs maintenance personnel, using the approved communication tools.

- Has a thorough knowledge of, and is able to demonstrate, the safe use and care of supplies and assigned equipment required in the provision of resident care.

- Provides a comfortable, safe and clean environment for residents, volunteers, visitors and fellow staff.

- Adheres to WorkSafe NB Acts & Regulations in all duties.

- Maintains professional and personal development through participation in continuous education programs, in-services, and other initiatives.

*Related and allied duties will be assigned from time to time as may become necessary to the operation of the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

- High school graduation or equivalent, plus an additional course in Personal Support Worker or Health Care Aide Course or equivalency.

- Physically and mentally capable of performing assigned tasks.

- Ability to work in a team setting and take direction.

- Good communication and interpersonal skills.

- Able to follow verbal and written instructions in English.

- Must be able to work shift work, weekends and holidays.

- Wages and benefits are consistent with the CUPE Collective Agreement.

Working Conditions: Three (3) Part Time positions available with hours ranging from 41 to 45.75 hours biweekly.
