The YMCA Southwestern New Brunswick is working hard to address the critical issues facing the region; the health crisis, population decline, youth outmigration and child poverty. At the Y, we are striving to build a diverse and inclusive community where each person is valued for the unique perspectives and contributions they bring.

The Y offers a diverse set of programs at 19 locations in the city and surrounding municipalities. We are a community of 450 employees and 500 volunteers. If you don't have a Y story yet - now is your opportunity to get involved. We invite you to come to see what the power of belonging can do for you, your career and your community.

The Opportunity

As a Recreation Coordinator at the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick, you will play an integral role in fostering the physical, mental, and social well-being of local children and youth. In this position, you will work closely with the Recreation Supervisor and the Health, Membership, and Recreation (HMR) team to develop and deliver inclusive, engaging programming. This includes facilitating birthday party packages at the Regional Y, supporting childminding services, and actively engaging with children aged 3 months to 5 years. Additionally, you will coordinate youth sports programs and activities, including overseeing the Medavie grant initiative, which provides a yearlong membership to youth in the Crescent Valley Community. You'll have the opportunity to work with local partners to reduce barriers to access and ensure that all youth and families can participate in YMCA programs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Medavie grant initiative by managing the yearlong membership program for youth in the Crescent Valley Community, working with local partners to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.
  • Facilitate and oversee birthday parties on weekends at the Regional Y, ensuring they run smoothly and creating positive experiences for families.
  • Provide support to childminding services, engaging children aged 3 months to 5 years and forming meaningful relationships with children and their families.
  • Plan, organize, and lead inclusive recreation and sports programming for youth and families, catering to participants of various skills and abilities.
  • Supervise youth programs, including drop-in and scheduled sports, while promoting leadership opportunities and volunteer engagement.
  • Ensure program spaces are safe, organized, and welcoming, maintaining equipment and enforcing facility guidelines to prevent accidents or incidents.
  • Manage administrative tasks, such as scheduling staff and volunteers, inputting program details into the system, and reporting participation and member usage.
  • Coach and mentor staff and volunteers to support their performance and the quality of programs.
  • Participate in workshops, training, and team meetings, contributing to the success of the YMCA's Health, Membership, and Recreation (HMR) department.
  • Act as part of the HMR support team, providing consistent operational assistance across YMCA member centers.
  • Work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and be part of the HMR support team to ensure continuous support for YMCA member centers.

  • Experience working with children, particularly in childcare, afterschool, or youth programs.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • A collaborative team player who shares leadership responsibilities with colleagues.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Employment is contingent on a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, clearance from the Department of Social Development, and proof of COVID-19 immunization.
