JOB PURPOSE

Perioperative/Perianesthesia nursing encompasses professional and clinical nursing activities which focus on identifying and meeting the needs of the surgical patient while applying the nursing process in a caring manner.

The RN in the charge role will have a good understanding of how to achieve a balance between clinical and operational needs, as well as a professional and team-focused demeanor which enhances team productivity and satisfaction. They will provide leadership, motivation, experience, and guidance to all other staff members including RNs, LPNs, Porters, EVS and PCAs.

The charge nurse must have a high level of organization, critical thinking and independent decision making; a working knowledge of / and to adhere to departmental Policies and Procedures, and Standard of Care for all 3 areas within the Day Surgery department (OR/PACU/Day Surgery)

The Charge Nurse will develop a broader knowledge of the Surgery Program by developing relationships with key members of other departments or roles to enhance patient flow and safety.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing
  • Current registration with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
  • minimum 5 years of Operating Room experience required
  • Current perioperative certification will be preferred
  • Post- basic or post- graduate course in O.R. nursing encompassing all surgical specialties required.
  • Exhibits qualities of initiative, effective change agent, and effective team player.
  • Demonstrates effective organizational skills
  • Demonstrates initiative and good judgment.
  • High regard for confidentiality and advocacy for patients.
  • Functions as a positive role model.
  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Determining the patient / room assignment and adjusting as required, i.e., between the 3 Departments (OR, PACU and admission/discharge), ensuring staffing levels are met, monitoring on time starts, turn over times and end times.
  • Liaison for Booking, Orsos, SJRH OR, Day Surgery, PACU, OR, Surgeons, anesthesiologists, Reps, doctors' offices etc. to ensure required instruments, equipment, and patient concerns are addressed in a timely manner and ready/available for day of surgery
  • Works in collaboration with resource nurses to organize daily resources (staff/equipment/materials etc.) and ensure good patient flow
  • Acting resource for incoming calls to the OR desk
  • Changeover report and safety huddle with incoming/outgoing shift staff
  • Coordination of daily staffing, (and provides, if necessary) break and lunch relief for team members
  • Advanced review of ORSOS schedule and booking to identifying equipment and staffing requirements
  • Works with ORSOS Liaison Nurse to streamline OR bookings
  • Streamline/manage instruments/ equipment and instrument sets in collaboration with the MDR Technician, resource nurses and other departments/hospitals
  • Works in conjunction with OR Materials in relation to purchases, repairs, loaners, quotes, etc
  • Facilitate product evaluations and trials in conjunction with Materials Management
  • Inventory Management
  • Assist with standardization of equipment and supplies
  • Assists OR Manager in identifying and realizing cost reduction strategies
  • Assists in researching new equipment/ supplies
  • Participates in monthly auditing processes
  • Assists in continuous development and enhancement of OR Team Model
  • Participates in meetings outside the Operating Room as required
  • Demonstrates expertise in clinical Perioperative Nursing
