JOB PURPOSE

This position is a senior administration position, reporting to the Facility Administrator of St Joseph's Hospital. The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for the delivery of patient care that promotes the safety and well- being of all patients throughout the organization on the assigned shift. The Nursing Supervisor plans, directs, coordinates, and evaluates all intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities, making critical decisions about global staff issues and operations that impact patient care on his/her assigned shift. The Nursing Supervisor is the designated on-site hospital administrator after normal business hours and therefore is responsible for all activities within the hospital in the absence of Administration and/or department managers. The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for the assessment of all requests for the Administrator on call contact and maintains open communication with all staff. This position requires a sound knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active registration in the Province of New Brunswick
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
  • BCLS, ACLS an asset.
  • Nursing administration certification desired.
  • Post graduate education in Administration or an equivalent combination of education and managerial experience.
  • Effective interpersonal/communication skills which include verbal, non-verbal, written.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel)
  • Demonstrates an ability to identify and solve problems, use initiative and sound judgement to reach quality decisions.

  • A minimum of (2) years' experience as a first-line manager is desired, coupled with three (3) years clinical nursing experience required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Resource Planning

  • Identifies the current and potential staffing needs of the Nursing Units and will reassign staff accordingly.
  • Consistently demonstrates an ability to adapt to changing priorities in the organization, utilizes time effectively in response to workload, staffing levels, and fluctuations in patient activity.
  • Evaluates departmental workload when making staffing decisions.
  • Conducts frequent rounds throughout the facility to ensure appropriate functioning of operations.
  • Provide relief for breaks on Nursing Units and assign break relief as necessary.
  • Provides guidance and support to staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Supervises and directs activities on the assigned shift.
  • Functions as a clinical resource to nursing staff and other members of the interdisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness and provides leadership during periods of stress with the nursing staff.
  • Builds a positive work environment by guiding employees to support the mission of the hospital, providing developmental opportunities and encouraging teamwork.
  • Demonstrates effective-delegation skills during increasing or decreasing periods of patient activity; intervenes during crisis and emergency situations providing leadership to the staff.

  • Adheres and enforces the Facility and Program/Department policies and procedures. Provides interpretation for staff as required.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of hospital policies and procedures, as well as making suggestions for revision of same.
  • Maintains currency with respect to all new policies and procedures published.
  • Monitors the implementation of all-organizational policies, primarily clinical practice standards by direct observation and interaction with the nursing staff.
  • Consistently monitors compliance with standards of care by observation, verbal reports and written documentation. Assists in the development of a plan to increase compliance and implements action to correct deficiencies.

  • Responds to all emergencies and disasters within the organization.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Is involved in direct patient care, as required, during emergencies.
  • Assumes a leadership role in all CODE situations in the facility and ensures notification of necessary personal in an emergency.
  • Makes frequent rounds to the various nursing units and relieves nursing staff for meals and breaks.
  • Obtains items for emergency use from pharmacy, stores, or health records
  • Assesses the health care needs of patients
