Research Assistant - General Surgery

About the Opportunity

The Research Assistant (Non-Clinical) provides essential support for research projects within the General Surgery Research Collaborative, Nova Scotia Health. The Research Assistant plays a key role in data collection, organization, and documentation while assisting the research team in achieving study objectives. This position involves engaging with study subjects, managing study materials, and ensuring the accurate execution of research protocols. We are looking for someone with a keen interest in health research and strong organizational skills.

Responsibilities:

• Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) and/or Research Coordinator in implementing study protocols.
• Support recruitment efforts by identifying and screening potential study subjects.
• Obtain informed consent from study participants under the supervision of the PI.
• Act as a point of contact for study subjects, answering questions, and addressing concerns.
• Help arrange and book study appointments, liaising with clinic staff and pharmacy as needed.
• Maintain accurate records of study subjects, including medical and family histories as required.
• Support data collection efforts by administering questionnaires, recording study data, and compiling study results.
• Carry out basic descriptive statistics and analyses
• Assist in monitoring study timelines and ensuring compliance with protocol guidelines.
• Prepare and maintain study materials, including educational/promotional documents.
• Assist with study expenditures, including monitoring and reconciling expenses.
• Organize and archive study data and documentation.
• Coordinate with other departments, including labs and shared services, to ensure study requirements are met.
• Ensure proper handling and reporting of Adverse Events (AEs) or Serious Adverse Events (SAEs).
• Support research team meetings and contribute to the development of study deliverables

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

• Currently enrolled in post-secondary education in a Health Science and/or Science related field required
• Completed post-secondary education in a Health Science and/or Science related field preferred
• Two years' research related experience preferred (Managing prospective clinical trials preferred)
• Relevant clinical experience considered an asset (surgical field preferred)
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint), email and internet; familiarity with basic statistics software an asset
• Knowledge of bookkeeping preferred
• Demonstrated research and analytical thinking skills
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills to engage with participants and team members
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
• Familiarity with research ethics and regulatory requirements (considered an asset)
• A commitment to fostering a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion within the research environment

Hours

• Full-time, long assignment (75 hours bi-weekly)
• Beginning as soon as possible for approximately 1 year
• This role requires you to be onsite and is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Compensation and Benefits

$22.34 - $27.93 hourly

$43,564 - $54,455 annually
