Under the direction of the Bailey House Coordinator the employee provides resident support services, on-site supervision, and security for The Salvation Army Bailey House

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides resident support services while on shift by:
  • Assisting residents with personal care concerns
  • Providing residents with supplies as required
  • Assisting residents with forms and requests as required
  • Interacting and communicating positively with residents throughout the shift
  • Assisting Caseworkers as required
  • Check on clients to ensure personal safety
  • Explaining/reinforcing information provided to clients in a consistent and professional manner
  • Carefully assisting residents with their medication and documenting same
  • Responding to medical emergencies within the facility
  • Regularly reporting to case workers concerning resident behaviours
  • Immediately reporting critical incidents to the on-call supervisor or the Bailey House Coordinator
  • Daily follow up of resident chores to ensure completion
  • Admitting and discharging residents according to the Policies and Procedures Manual
  • Reporting AWOL or late residents as required according to Policies and Procedures manual

Provides site management and security throughout the Shift by:

  • Works wake shift during the night
  • Assuring security of facility through monitoring cameras, locking appropriate doors and using and monitoring the alarm system
  • Ensuring resident's guests are signed in and out within curfew hours
  • Monitoring resident's day plans
  • Completing regular rounds and head counts to ensure that all residents are accounted for according to policy and procedure
  • Completing room checks as per policy and procedure
  • Complete building checks as per policy and procedure
  • Monitoring security screens and responding as appropriate
  • Completing room searches as directed by the Caseworkers or Bailey House Coordinator
  • Ensuring that residents do not exceed their allowable limit of personal effects
  • Itemizing and packing up clients' personal effects when they are removed from the facility
  • Assisting with the general upkeep and maintenance of the Bailey House
  • Overnight staff need to respond to hourly radio checks
  • Respond to radio requests for assistance in other departments as appropriate

Provides administrative support while on shift by:

  • Documentation and report writing
  • General Reception duties including answering the telephone and relaying messages to clients and other departments as required
  • Sending e-mail messages as required
  • Completes records/forms such as: Client Medication; Incident reports; Occurrence Reports
  • Completing filing duties, which includes preparing new files, archiving old files, retrieving archived files when there are returning clients
  • Maintaining accurate client records
  • Database entries - case notes, behaviour, medications, intakes, discharges, etc.
  • Responding to requests from other departments within the NWT Resource Centre where feasible
  • Attending all scheduled staff meetings
  • Maintaining current understanding of policies and procedures
  • Maintaining healthy working relationships with NWT Resource Centre staff, Bailey House staff, allied professionals and other referral parties
  • Relaying pertinent information related to client concerns, operational issues, community issues, etc. promptly to appropriate personnel
  • Following formal lines of communication as identified by The Salvation Army organizational structure
  • Other duties as assigned by Bailey House Coordinator or his designate

Responsible for utilizing the facility and its equipment in a safe and efficient manner by:

· Maintaining current understanding of policies and procedures

· Maintaining and using supplies prudently

· Report any facility or equipment concerns immediately to Bailey House Coordinator

· Implementing appropriate emergency procedures related to the facility and/or the clients i.e. CPR, fire evacuations, etc.

· Completing unusual occurrence documentation as required

· Identifying and reporting any unsafe conditions promptly to the Bailey House Coordinator and the Operations Manager

· Familiar with the Centre's physical layout, including location of fire pull boxes, extinguishers, emergency phones, maintenance rooms, boiler room, etc.

· Maintain a clean and professional looking office space

Working Conditions:

The work environment can be fast paced and demanding. The need to be constantly aware of the environment and the movements and attitudes of the individual clients can be stressful. There is a potential to work with aggressive, high-risk clients in this position.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

Generally, these skills are found in individuals who have previous experience or training in security settings. Appropriate computer skills are obtained through general introduction courses in computers or through many years of practical experience.

Certifications that are required are:

  • Post-Secondary Education or related experience in Social Services
  • High School Graduate
  • First Aid
  • Verbal Judo and/or NVCI
  • Suicide Intervention
  • WHMIS
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Clear Criminal Record Check

  • Ability to work within a teamwork structure though will be required to work alone
  • Effective interviewing skills
  • Understanding of: Aboriginal and Inuit Cultures: Addictions: Mental Health and other social issues
  • Computer skills are required

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Valid Vulnerable Sector Screening
  • Valid First Aid certificate
  • WHMIS
  • The Salvation Army on-line certification for abuse prevention
  • Clear internal abuse registry check
  • Participate in mandatory yearly training
  • Must be Canadian citizen.

DAYS and HOURS of work: will be scheduled by supervisor.
