Description

Reporting to the Ministry Unit Director, the Psychotherapist is a professionally qualified clinician whose main purpose is the assessment and treatment of clients experiencing the effects of abuse and/or Trauma and Stress Related Disorders. The Psychotherapist may also work with clients who are experiencing mood, anxiety and personality disorders and occasionally more serious mental health diagnoses. Working actively with their clients, they recommend psychotherapeutic goals and facilitate relevant treatment plans to address client needs. This work serves the Mission of the Army to meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the community, expressed in spiritual ministry and social services that serve the vulnerable and under-served.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assessment

  • Complete telephone intake screening with potential clients to assess eligibility and suitability for treatment.
  • Complete detailed intake assessments with new clients, using standard bio-psycho-social-spiritual assessment practices.
  • Assess clients for disorders of thought, cognition, mood, emotional regulation, perception or memory that may seriously impair the individual's judgment, insight, behavior, communication, or social functioning.
  • Assess clients for issues pertaining to their family of origin history and/or history of abuse for determinants affecting the client's current situations.
  • Assess client suitability for participation in psychotherapy groups when scheduled

Advocacy and Referrals:

  • Provide referrals to the Transitional Housing and Support and/or Legal Support Worker who will provide legal information and support for clients and accompany them to navigate court and legal appointments.
  • Provide information and assistance with clients' practical needs, including advocating for clients with Agencies, Services, Lawyers, Shelters and Housing providers.
  • Provide referrals to the workshop program when applicable to meet client needs.

Counseling and Psychotherapeutic Treatment:

  • Provide short-term psychotherapy, support and information for clients consistent with the Individual Program Plan.
  • Arrange for the spiritual care and pastoral counseling of clients and staff, while ensuring and respecting the freedom of choice and privacy of individuals to select and/or request spiritual support. Provide basic spiritual care assessment and counseling to clients as requested or refer clients to the Director/Chaplain for this service as applicable.
  • Establish appropriate therapeutic treatment goals with the client to direct the treatment plan
  • Develop an Individual Treatment Plan and Program Plan for each client, determining which specific therapeutic modalities to use with each client.
  • Provide psychotherapy with each client using standard therapeutic modalities in the context of the therapeutic relationship.
  • Regularly review with each client the progress toward meeting the treatment goals, ensuring the psychotherapy provided is assisting clients in moving toward completion of their goals.
  • Conduct discharge planning with each client when they are preparing for discharge from FLRC programs.

Record Keeping and Administration:

  • Update client file progress notes after each session and contact ensuring that client files are completely up to date by the end of each week.
  • Complete a discharge summary for each client.
  • Maintain all appropriate record keeping for clients both in the WISH database and in the physical client file according to the FLRC/WCC Policy and Procedure Manual.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
  • Flexibility is required and schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a Master's Degree in Counselling, Psychology, or Social Work.
  • Member in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, or other equivalent professional College.
  • Training in EMDR, somatic experiencing and/or sensorimotor psychotherapy an asset.
  • Valid Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Valid Non Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum 1-2 years' experience in providing trauma informed/trauma specific psychotherapy
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Must be actively involved in ongoing professional development
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
