Description

This position is a part of a collaborative management team and provides day-to-day supervision of program staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and customer service excellence to meet the needs of shelter clients in a housing focus holistic manner in accordance with policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the program operations in accordance with the mission and values of The Salvation Army and the Brantford Booth Centre
  • Oversee and direct the planning, organization and implementation of case management plans
  • Assist ED in screening CFC (Corrections) client cases in preparation for CFC meetings
  • Liaise with community resources and encourage community involvement in programs, partnerships and program development
  • Oversee and support frontline staff in the planning, implementation and continued direction of all program areas involving assigned clients
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the psychological and social dynamics of working with individuals who have diverse needs and interests
  • Ensure that a spiritual dynamic is included in all programming
  • Ensure all documentation and records are completed in an organized and timely manner, e. shift reports, intake, program evaluations, daily logs, the collection of data and incident reports, daily and monthly statistics and tracking staff hours and schedules Responsible for assisting in client emergencies and records all incidents
  • Develop appropriate and therapeutic relationships with participants, act as a role model at all times as well as with their families/caregivers/staff as necessary to work towards developing positive and open communication
  • Ensure that staff maintain the security and upkeep of the building and grounds; plan, coordinate and monitor any property maintenance and repairs that require an external contractor
  • Prepare and submit reports, proposals, grant applications and program evaluations as requested by internal or external sources
  • Maintain confidentiality of all records and statistical data
  • Develop and implement effective procedures for client intake, etc.
  • Complete intake for new program participants and ensure their transition is completed appropriately and in a timely manner
  • Evaluate client goals, outcomes and overall program effectiveness at regularly appointed intervals and ensure revision of program plans as necessary
  • Plan, develop and revise policies, protocols and day-to-day operating policies for all program areas in compliance with government and The Salvation Army Standards including accreditation requirements
  • Have input into program departmental budget requirements

Human Resources

  • Hire, orientate, train, evaluate, reward, discipline and terminate in consultation with the Executive Director or designate in compliance with Divisional and Territorial standards
  • Schedule staff in accordance with residential standards
  • Prepare, post, and maintain all departmental staff work schedules for those supervised
  • Ensure that employee files are up to date and stored in a secure area
  • Responsible for completion and update of employee position descriptions and job duties for those supervised
  • Identify staff training requirements and make recommendations regarding staff development for those supervised
  • Conduct regular supervision with staff; ensure that performance reviews are completed, in a timely manner, for all staff
  • Complete payroll supervisory functions in UltiPro inclusive of approving vacation, sick time, timesheets, etc. for staff
  • Hold regular team meetings with staff
  • May participate in the negotiation of contract renewals with funder to enhance program delivery
  • Provide support and team leadership to staff and ensure that they work together to achieve the purposes of the organization
  • Ensure that all staff complete any mandatory training or certifications as required; identify any training needs and report to the supervisor

Health and Safety

  • Monitor staff safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards, and prepares, submits and acts on incident reports
  • Provide calming intervention as required ensuring the safety of everyone
  • Monitor compliance with health and safety legislation, provide advice, make recommendations and improvements, and assist with the development of company policies/guidelines/handbooks as it relates to health and safety
  • Responsible to maintain a level of competency and understand Sections 25 and 26 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) Ensure that the measures and procedures prescribed (OHSA) are carried out in the workplace and that every reasonable precaution is taken for the protection of the worker and workplace
  • Responsible to work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Acts and Regulations
  • Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer and use the prescribed safety equipment
  • Provide oversight to WSIB claims and other health and safety matters as required within applicable departments, including supervision of the Early and Safe Return to Work Program
  • Ensure that proper procedures are followed in the event of a workplace injury or illness, conducting incident investigations when required
  • Participate in all Health and Safety related accidents and injury investigations

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities and support the Mission in all aspects of work, including the manner in which responsibilities are fulfilled
  • Maintain information in confidence as required
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member
  • Participate in probationary and annual performance appraisal process
  • Provide necessary resources, supports and training to program staff
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner and assist personnel whom the position supports in developing those skills as required
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training
  • Adhere to all Salvation Army Brantford Booth policies, directives, operating guidelines and Collective Agreement
  • Provide a safe and healthy work and program environment for all employees, participants, students and/or volunteers
  • Ensure that all staff are aware of emergency procedures and are prepared to implement them immediately as necessary
  • Be familiar with and adhere to the Collective Agreement
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change
  • Assist all programs as needed in (i.e. staff coverage for program)

Perform other duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full time position
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities - some weekend and evening work may be required
  • On-call is required

Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate University Degree in Human Services field or in Social Work, or equivalent
  • Current First Aid & CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver's abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience in a social service setting, supervision, budgeting, working with marginalized clientele; a social services background
  • Working knowledge of issues pertaining to homeless individuals
  • Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of effective case management
  • Experience and working knowledge of the homeless individuals and family's information system
  • Working in a non-profit and unionized environment is an asset
  • Experience working with a diverse population and an ability to demonstrate a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental approach to clients
  • Knowledge of and proven ability in linking with community resources

  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
