Description

In compliance with the Mission Statement of The Salvation Army Booth Centre, to minister to those in need and other persons affected by homelessness by practical assistance through a demonstration of Christian love and concern. Under the direction of the Shelter Manager, the driver will provide a service to clients by maintaining the mobile kitchen/soup van at a high standard of cleanliness on a daily basis, while interacting in a positive, supportive manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities

  • Supervise and work cooperatively with volunteers.
  • Load van with prepared soup, juice, sandwiches etc. for delivery.
  • Prepare coffee in soup van.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe food handling practices.
  • Provide material assistance (i.e., clothing etc.) to soup van clients and their families according to approved office procedures and availability of items.
  • Drive van to specified locations and serve clients.
  • Provide general pastoral care, related interviews and making referrals as necessary.
  • Develop a network and make referrals to existing services and resources in the community including those of other Salvation Army departments.
  • Maintain cleanliness of Soup Van, inside and out, including the area where the food is stored.
  • Upon return to Centre, clean soup containers, sandwich bins etc. and leave the kitchen clean to meet the standard of the Public Health Department.
  • Contact emergency service personnel as needed.
  • Complete incident reports, and statistics nightly.
  • Complete daily log sheet, turn in weekly.
  • Complete daily inspection of vehicle.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to clients, staff and the Centre's records and business.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Centre's Health & Safety Policies.
  • Meet with Executive Director for supervision as scheduled.
  • Participate in performance evaluation sessions with supervisor as required.
  • Model appropriate qualities for this position: self-motivation, punctuality, personal hygiene.
  • Commit to and sign the Centre's confidentiality form.
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops and conferences as authorized by the Centre.
  • Work within mandate and mission of the Salvation Army.
  • Represent The Salvation Army Booth Centre in a professional manner.

Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a relief position with no guaranteed hours. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.

  • May work with potentially aggressive clients.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • University/College diploma in Social Services, and/or a combination of education and life-related experience.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and a current copy of a Driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Possess a current First Aid and CPR, non-violent Crisis Intervention and WHIMIS certificate.
  • Possess a Food Handlers Certificate prior to starting.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Possess knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment, and cleaning materials.
  • Possess knowledge of community-based resources.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Possess excellent oral, written communication skills and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Maturity and ability to exercise sound judgement.
  • Ability to establish and implement goals and plans for self and clients.
  • Ability to work both independently and under supervision.
  • Ability to lift/carry loads up to forty pounds.
  • Manage time wisely.
  • Available to work evening shifts.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
