Description

The Family Care Centre Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army Kitchener Community Church and Family Care Centre. The position supports all Family Care Centre programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Support

  • Facilitate and/or coordinate Family Care Centre programs as needed including but not limited to: Cooking, sewing, language, family, VBS, day camp, Pathways of Hope etc.
  • Have knowledge of Community Supports.
  • Actively promote all Kitchener Community and Family Care Centre programs.
  • Coordinate and oversee the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign and recruit necessary support staff as required.
  • Assist with the annual Share the Warmth program.

Client Management

  • Greet clients and answer phones as required.
  • Conduct initial intake applications and screen clients for assistance including food, clothing, and household needs.
  • Ensure all clients are treated with dignity and respect and maintain all information in confidence.
  • Make referrals as needed.

Emergency Disaster Service

  • Coordinates EDS schedules and communicates regularly with volunteers.
  • Keep EDS van stocked with supplies.
  • Maintain records.
  • On occasion, be available to help support Sunday meal program.

Reporting

  • Maintain reporting systems including Link2Feed Ontario, referral sheets and appointment books.
  • Maintain confidentiality and keep accurate statistical records.
  • Retain reports and statistics for Family Care Centre programs.

Perform other duties as mutually agreed upon.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities. Some evening and week-end work may be required. Flexibility in scheduling is essential.
  • Working environment is typically at the Family Care Centre in generally agreeable conditions.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.
  • May include occasional travel with the EDS van for the EDS food distribution location in downtown Kitchener on occasion.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a Community College Certificate in social services, Community Services, or equivalent is preferred.
  • Current Safe Food Handling and valid First Aid & CPR is required or willingness to obtain.
  • Mental Health First Aid is recommended.
  • A valid Ontario Drivers License (class G), an original copy of current driver's abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion, is required.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum one (1) year of prior related experience in a variety of social service programs.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources, government, and social service agencies.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Good computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrated patience and compassion to work with a wide variety of individuals including those with challenging situations.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Attention to detail, excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Lead by example, demonstrate a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Able to effectively complete multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines and responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by the Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening if necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
