The London Village offers a variety of programs to meet the diverse needs of families including a Child Care Centre, Respite Program for individuals with intellectual disabilities and Adult Day Program for seniors. At our Child Care Centre children's learning, development, health and well-being are important to us. Through play and inquiry, children practice ways of learning and interacting with the world around them. Play promotes problem solving, communication, collaborations, creativity, imagination, and initiative.

The Early Childhood Educator closely with all other members of the program team to provide nurturing care and education to young children in a group setting, under the supervision of the Assistant Program Director; in accordance with the goals and curriculum plans, philosophy, and policies of the London Village and in compliance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Services:

  • General supervision and management of a classroom and the safety and well-being of the children.
  • Assist in orientating new children and families and provides tours of the program, as necessary.
  • Share and participate in the responsibility for planning, preparing, and implementing stimulating, environments and activities that encourage children's curiosity and competencies, and promote each child's social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and physical development.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the Child Care Program Statement in all areas of their conduct and responsibilities.
  • Ensure that all information about children, family, staff, visitors, and volunteers are strictly confidential.
  • Communicate effectively with children, families, co-workers, and other professionals.
  • Make recommendations, when necessary, based on observations and developmental checklists.
  • Arrange and/or attend family/ community conferences as required.
  • Responsible for daily housekeeping routines; assist with toy/equipment disinfecting, maintaining the play environments and storage areas in an organized and clutter-free condition.
  • Participate in the supervision, guidance, training and mentoring of staff, students, and volunteers when necessary.
  • Engages in child's play to support development, challenge thinking and extend learning.
  • Ensure that all information about children, family, staff, visitors, and volunteers are strictly confidential; and that children's files are confidentially secured.
  • Ensure full compliance with child protection legislation and intervene when necessary.
  • Responsible for the security of the Child Care Program (opening and closing).

Communication/Administration:

  • Prepare and maintain appropriate and necessary activity reports.
  • Ensure accurate recording in daily logbooks, program sheets, charting sheets, etc.

Health and Safety

  • Assist with effective risk management; monitoring food safety, medication storage/disbursement, allergies, and facility cleanliness/maintenance; provides emergency first aid and completes reports and file incident reports as required.
  • Share responsibility for maintaining program equipment in good repair; Report any property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment and/or repairs needed in the program to the Director or Designate.
  • Complete mandatory yard inspections and complete daily checklist

Working Conditions:

  • This is a permanent, full-time position with 40 weekly hours of work currently scheduled Monday to Friday, between 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. commencing on October 28, 2024 to November 11, 2024
  • Must be flexible to meet program needs.
  • Ability to work across different age groups (e.g., infants and toddlers) and adapt to various roles, including that of a Program Assistant.
  • The performance of the job requires frequently lifting/moving equipment and children, room set-up, occasionally intervening in physical confrontations, story telling, cleaning (of the facility/equipment), and putting up wall displays.
  • The job requires frequent movement up and down from a seated position on the floor and/or from a seated position on furniture, that sits low to the floor.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing and pulling.
  • Lifting, kneeling and standing for long periods of time.
  • Walking and standing for long periods.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Early Childhood Educator Diploma or equivalent as determined by the Ministry of Education or equivalency, preferred.
  • Registered member of good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario.
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR Level C, required.
  • Required to have a health assessment and immunization.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience, including, experience working with younger children.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Work within the legal standards of the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014, "How Does Learning Happen" and the Safe, Healthy Children Manual for Childcare.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to participate as an active team member in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have excellent oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Self-motivated/disciplined.
  • Represent The Salvation Army in a positive manner.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Email and Internet etc.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills an asset.
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
