The Salvation Army London Village has been an integral part of the London community since 1954 providing excellence in care to families in need. The London Village offers a variety of programs to meet the diverse needs of families including a Child Care Centre, Respite Program for individuals with intellectual disabilities and Adult Day Program for seniors. Our program site sits on 9 ½ acres of beautiful green space and offers a gymnasium, pool, pavilion and playground equipment for everyone to enjoy. The Respite Program supports adults and children with intellectual disabilities and their families offering different program options to meet individual need.

Respite Support Staff provide care for children, youth and adults with a diagnosed Intellectual disability. Services include Centre-Based Respite, Residential Care, Summer Programs and Day Programs.

This position is best suited for someone that can fulfill our pledge to encourage participant independence, advocate for community inclusion, foster friendships and provide positive role modeling.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Client Services:

  • Responsible to ensure that needs of program participants are met i.e. physically, emotionally, medically, and behaviorally.
  • Contribute to the planning and facilitation of recreation & leisure activities and community outings (appropriate to age, skill level and interests) which provide opportunities to promote inclusion in the community.
  • Advocate on the behalf of the program participants to promote health and well-being.
  • Ensure that participants follow through on personal care routines and routines of daily living.
  • Provide intervention for any behavioral challenges.
  • Liaise with parents, caregivers, community partners as required.
  • Responsible for transportation of participants in the program vehicles.
  • Prepare and distribute meals, snacks/nourishments as outlined on the approved menu.
  • Complete for house maintenance duties as outlined under "shift responsibilities" as well as the organization and maintenance of property and program supplies.

Communication/Administration:

  • Ensure proper recording in the daily log, shift change book, anecdotal recordings, incident reports, restraint forms, etc.
  • Report any identified needs to team members, Respite Program Supervisor and/or on -call designate and parent/usual caregiver.
  • Maintenance and updating of participant records and other program documentation.

Human Resources:

  • Provide support and direction to casual/relief staff, new staff/volunteers/students.
  • Assume shift coordinator tasks as assigned.

Property:

  • Report any property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment and/or repairs needed in the program.

Shift Coordinator Responsibilities:

Note: When assigned shift coordinator responsibilities a per hour allowance will be provided.

  • Responsible for dispensing medication and ensuring that all medication charting is completed in compliance with established agency policies.
  • Required to complete safety checks, logbook recordings, intake and discharge functions.

Perform other position related duties as required.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a permanent part-time position based on 17 hours every other weekend.
  • The shifts are as follows, however flexibility to meet program needs is required.
  • Saturday: 7am - 3pm
  • Sunday: 7am - 4pm
  • The expected start date for this position is September 2024.
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • Some travel is associated with this position.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing and pulling.
  • Walking and standing for long periods.
  • Some kneeling, running may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed two (2) years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including direct care work in a social service setting; dealing with crises.
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development and training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Self-motivated/disciplined.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Email and Internet etc.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License is required, current original copy of driver's abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, also required.
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
