Job Description

Supervised Practice Experience Partnership Program (SPEPP) (Internationally Educated Nurses) Who are Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs)? Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) represent individuals who completed their registered nursing education and practice experience in a country other than Canada.

The Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) is a program delivered in collaboration with Ontario Health and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) . SPEP Nurse Learners will work in a learner capacity for up to 450 hours under the direct supervision of a preceptor to demonstrate application of nursing knowledge, skill, and judgment. Learners will work in close collaboration with the healthcare team to demonstrate an understanding of their nursing accountabilities in line with the CNO Entry to Practice Competencies. THP will provide a supportive environment for learners to demonstrate evidence of safe practice as they assume increasing autonomy and accountability in the provision of care for patients.

Key Qualifications:

  • SPEP is available to RN oapplicants, including nurses returning to practice.
    • The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) will indicate whether an applicant is eligible for the SPEP. Check the CNO applicant portal to see what requirements you have outstanding to determine if you are eligible.
  • Applicants are eligible if they have met all their registration requirements except for:
    • Evidence of Practice, or
    • Evidence of Practice and Language Proficiency.
  • Evidence of practice must have expired no more than 5 years for internationally educated nurses and 8 years for nurses in the non-practicing class.
  • Applicants must provide:
  • Evidence of qualification for a Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (found on CNO applicant portal)
  • Evidence of a nursing license in good standing from another jurisdiction (if applicable)
  • Evidence of registration in the non-practicing class for less than 8 years (if applicable)

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible and accountable for the provision of resident care under the supervision of a nurse preceptor assigned to them in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards, while taking into account the limitations placed on the position
  • Works with the preceptor to ensure that the incumbent has the knowledge, skills and judgment needed to perform all actions/duties, such as completing physical assessments, administering medications, implementing nursing interventions, assisting with activities of daily living, and other care activities necessary in meeting the resident's personal needs and comfort
  • Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever needed and alerts team members when any change or concern about the patient's condition is raised
  • Reports to work on all shifts assigned, or ensures that the Manager is notified if absence prior to the start of the shift
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Satisfactory performance and attendance required
