Job Description

Working with the Town of Newmarket's Recreation and Culture Team, means the opportunity to make a difference and connect with your community! We are looking for dedicated individuals who enjoy working with person with disabilities who have a passion to deliver high quality programs, events and services. The Successful Candidate will:

  1. Research and plan activities for BASE (Adult Day Program) to meet the needs of participants and promote engagement and skill development.

  2. Prepare weekly program schedules, coordinate off-site trips and book special guests.

  3. Assist with Volunteer and Inclusion Facilitator - Adult Day Program interviews, training, evaluations, and ongoing coaching, in addition to staff/volunteer scheduling to ensure ratios are maintained.

  4. Support staff in facilitating specialized activities, managing behavioural challenges and providing personal care of adults with disabilities (i.e. toileting, changing and feeding). Occasionally may involve physical contact with participants (i.e. guidance).

  5. Manage program inventory and monitor program quality by submitting program recommendations for changes/enhancements.

  6. Respond to emergency situations including performing minor first aid and/or arranging for medical assistance.

  7. Maintain confidential records, including emergency contact information, individual needs, behaviour protocols, and health concerns of participants.

  8. Main point of contact for parents/guardians regarding participant needs, and assists with participant intake meetings. Responsible for updating Inclusion Facilitators on participant requirements. Consult with supervisors for strategies, as needed.

  9. Update York Region Transportation regarding participant schedule changes, and ensures safe arrival and dismissal of participants.

  10. Support adapted year-round programming operations including adapted programs, adapted summer camps, and provide behaviour management support as needed to campers with disabilities during summer and school holidays.

Job Requirements
  1. College or University student or graduate of a Social Work/Behaviour Science education, Recreation/Therapeutic Recreation and/or related discipline, which is complimented by minimum (3) years related experience working with individuals with special needs.

  2. Continuing education within their field to keep up with trends, legislation, related skill policies, processes, and requirements within the recreational/special needs/inclusion setting.

  3. Progressive supervisory experience working within a related field.

  4. Excellent customer service, communication, leadership, and organizational skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons, parents, and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.

  5. Excellent planning, organizational and time management and a proven background in the delivery of Inclusion/Special Needs programs and services. Experience in adaptive programming and implementation of accommodations.

  6. Behaviour management skills are essential, ability to handle challenging situations.

  7. Problem solving skills to identify risks and create action plans.

  8. Demonstrated team effectiveness skills. Works in concert with team members, co-workers, suppliers, customers and other stakeholders.

  9. Able to consistently meet deadlines in a multi-task environment.

  10. Strong computer skills with hands-on knowledge of MS Office and internet.

  11. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  12. Valid Ontario class "G" driver's license and use of a vehicle for corporate business (mileage compensated).

  13. Current High Five (Principles of Healthy child Development) certification required.

  14. Current Safe Management/Non-Violent Crisis Prevention certification or equivalent required.

  15. Current Standard First Aid with CPR certification required.

  16. Due to the nature of the contacts of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Town is required.

  17. Availability/flexibility to attend and organize evening/weekend programs, meetings, and events.

Please Note: Certifications are not required at time of application but must be obtained prior to job commencement. The Town of Newmarket may offer opportunities for certification.
