We are Somerset West Community Health Centre (SWCHC), a non-profit, community-governed organization that serves over 18,000 clients annually. Established in 1978, SWCHC provides a wide range of health care services such as primary health care, health promotion, community development, mental health, and harm reduction. Job Summary:

The Community Engagement Manager is responsible for coordinating and implementing community programs that align with the Centre's strategic priorities and direction. They manage all aspects of staffing and administration for the Community Engagement team, which includes the Community Health Promotion portfolio, the Rochester Heights Community House, and the Yet Keen Seniors Day Centre. This role also oversees various outreach programs, including our community response teams and the alternative neighborhood crisis response team.

The Community Engagement Manager builds and maintains strong relationships with residents, local businesses, and community associations. They also coordinate strategic advocacy efforts on behalf of the SWCHC Board of Directors to promote healthy public policies across all levels of government. Acknowledging the presence of systemic racism in institutions and communities, this role provides leadership in advancing anti-racism and anti-oppression initiatives within the organization and the community.


Job Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in relevant discipline (social work, sociology, public health, etc.) or a combination of undergraduate degree and significant community development experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and successfully implement strategic initiatives.
  • Understanding of the Community Health Centre model of care, including community development lens.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of health equity, inclusion and anti-racism/anti-oppression.
  • Strong understanding of equity, anti-racism, the social determinants of health and how these issues relate to the policy and political systems.
  • Demonstrated analytical and policy analysis skills and the ability to synthesize and communicate to different audiences.
  • Demonstrated broad-based management skills including leadership, human resources, finance, decision-making, change management and communications.
  • Community program development and project management skills and experience.
  • Strong technical skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, Google, social media platforms and productivity tools (for example, Canva, Survey Monkey).
  • Standard First Aid

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Fosters an organizational culture consistent with the SWCHC mission, vision, and values.
  • As a member of the leadership team, ensures transparent decision making, accountability, and communication processes, ensuring organizational success.
  • Identifies and explores the need for new programs and services and supports development.
  • Contributes to the Centre's work by participation in activities that seek to strengthen collaborative and interdisciplinary teamwork, such as inter-component committees and working groups, strategic planning and accreditation activities.
  • Liaises with funders, management, and community partners to support financial solvency and good use of resources. Oversees and supports new funding requests within portfolio.
  • Supports internal and external communications policies and procedures which promote awareness of and participation in organizational activities.
  • Supports SWCHC operational and strategic planning processes and execution.
  • Maintains an awareness of current issues in the SWCHC catchment area and in the health and social services systems to support this effort. Shares responsibility for strategic direction decisions for SWCHC with other members of the leadership team.
  • Builds, promotes, and maintains strong partnerships with other Community Health and Resource Centers, institutions (hospitals), service agencies, funders, City of Ottawa departments and organizations at the local and provincial levels.

  • English, written and spoken mandatory
