POSITION:

Clinical Extern

SUMMARY OF JOB:

The clinical extern will be working in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider. Clinical externs work in collaboration with a unit clinical team under direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed registered health professional

Assists the unit clinical team in a team-based model of care to provide support to the patient care teams by assisting with basic clinical tasks including;

o Performing vital signs under supervision;

o Documenting all interventions for patient care; o Provide mouth care;

o Observe and reporting changes in patient’s condition;

o Lifting, positioning, turning, transferring and ambulating patients; o Transporting patients and specimens as required;

o Weighing patients;

o Feeding, bathing/grooming and toileting; o Bed making;

o Responding to patient requests, including call bells; o Assisting with emergency situations as directed;

o Providing one-on-one observation and care of designated patients. o Demonstrate PSFDH values: accountability, innovation, respect o Other duties as required

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS MANDATORY

Currently enrolled in:

oAny year of an approved baccalaureate nursing program: o Any year of an approved practical nursing program;

o Any year of an approved BScN-IEN or PN-IEN program; o Any year of an approved Occupational Therapy program; o Any year of an approved Physiotherapy program;

o Second year of an approved Paramedic program;

o Final year of an approved MD program (recent Canadian Medical graduates awaiting start of residency)

o Second to third year of an approved Respiratory Therapy program

Current BCLS;

Knowledge of body mechanics, and safe patient lift and transfer practices;

Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team;

Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communicate any concerns, changes in the patient’s condition;

Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;

Commitment to maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care;

Proficient computer/technological skills;

Ability to work under pressure, request assistance when required, and to adapt to change rapidly.

ASSETS:

Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute clinical area, preferred;

Basic knowledge of performing vital signs, sterility and aseptic technique and established Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety practices;

Shifts: Maximum 75.0 Bi-weekly hours - Days/Evenings/Nights/Weekends, 8 & 12 hours/shifts (subject to change)

Salary: $20.60 per hour
