The Advanced Practice Nurse Educator (APNE) - Clinical Nurse Specialist provides strength-based leadership, clinical consultation, coaching/mentoring, role modeling and educational activities to enhance knowledge translation and staff development at an individual, team, program, and organizational level. The successful candidate will develop, deliver and evaluate education for inpatient and ambulatory services. The APNE plays a key role in supporting the strategic plan and academic mandate and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders.

The inpatient Rehabilitation and Complex Continuing Care team consists of three specialized teams, the Brain Injury Rehab, Specialized Orthopedic and Developmental Rehab, and Complex Care and Rehab Transitional Care Teams. Ambulatory services include a variety of specialized clinics and a day program.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Assesses/plans/implements and evaluates the learning needs of nurses to support the clinical care needs of clients, new client populations and collaborative teamwork
  • Provides expertise assessment and treatment recommendations for point of care nurses
  • Functions as a content expert and resource person in their specialized field of practice, and takes advantage of informal and formal learning opportunities to educate nurses and the inter-professional team.
  • Substantiated ability to coach, mentor, educate and support staff in an individual and team setting
  • Collaborates with Collaborative Practice Leaders, Operations Managers, Clinical Resource Leaders and Nursing Practice Council related to the development and revision of evidence-based nursing standards of practice, practice alerts, policies and procedures and the quality and safety of care.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices

Education

  • Plans/conducts and evaluates orientation sessions for new nursing and other staff using best practices in education methodology
  • Plans and coordinates education initiatives that enables people and teams to continue to provide knowledgeable, compassionate, and safe, high quality client and family centred care.
  • Plans/conducts and evaluates educational opportunities that helps employees with ongoing growth and development to their full potential
  • Provides education leadership to inpatient, ambulatory and dental nursing staff to achieve excellence with new clinical skills and competencies
  • Responsible for supporting student and faculty learning by: fostering learning relationships with external academic partners, partnering with clinical instructors and students, working collaboratively with the Student Coordinator in the Teaching and Learning Institute and championing the Teaching and Learning across the organization.

Leadership

The APNE will use strength based leadership, the Health Leadership Capabilities Framework (LEADS) and Canadian Nurses Association Advanced Practice Nursing: A Pan-Canadian Framework to develop their own skills and engage others, build partnerships and networks to achieve results, and use systems/critical thinking to champion and orchestrate change.

  • Provides leadership in the area of clinical education and is a resource person and role model for nursing and the inter-professional team
  • Contributes to the development of professional nursing practice through participation and leadership in unit/organizational and professional activities
  • Provides leadership to assigned projects (e.g. wound care, medication management, new technology/informatics, Meditech expanse, etc.)
  • Guides, initiates and provides leadership to support operational effectiveness
  • Participates in professional, program and hospital-wide initiatives
  • Actively promotes professional role through participation in external forums
  • Examines current processes, identifies opportunities for change and provides recommendations for improvements
  • Participates and/or provides leadership to committees, as required

Research

  • Uses evidence in practice, develops and uses clinical practice guidelines, pathways and protocols in nursing education and service delivery
  • Participates in quality improvement and research activities as required
  • Functions as a content expert and resource person in their specialized field of practice, and enables informal and formal learning opportunities to educate the inter-professional team
  • Enhances personal and professional development through reflective practice and by attending educational opportunities and /or conferences

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education/Experience:

  • Master degree in nursing or in a related health care field - education leadership stream preferred
  • Valid registration and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Canadian Nurses Association Certification in a related care specialty preferred
  • Minimum three years experience in paediatric and/or rehabilitation nursing preferred
  • Minimum one year experience in an education role preferred
  • Experience in adult learning and education, program development and evaluation, practice development improvements, quality improvement and research
  • Eligibility for cross appointment with an academic institution
  • Knowledge and understanding of the healthcare system and health professions education and academic system

Skills:

  • Superior verbal and written English language communication skills
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, presentation/teaching and organizational skills
  • Ability to operate independently and in collaboration with inter-professional colleagues
  • Strong facilitation skills to manage within an evolving environment
  • Ability to integrate new practice approaches to meet the needs of changing client populations
  • Demonstrated competence in consulting/collaborating with other internal/external stakeholders
  • Continued evidence of an active pursuit of knowledge, skills and expertise in best practice patterns, and the ability to integrate them into the clinical setting
