Animal Attendant Research Vivarium (Job ID: 9073)

The Research Vivarium at St. Michael's is a new, 22,000 square foot state of the art facility located within the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. Serving the in-vivo based research and teaching needs of its scientists, physicians and surgeons, the Vivarium is looking for a qualified candidate to fill one of its Animal Attendant positions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operate large pass-through washing machines to clean animal cages, racks and bottles

Operate large pass-through autoclave to sterilize cages and supplies

Janitorial maintenance of the facility including sweeping and mopping, laundry, and removing garbage

Wash and sanitize animal pens with high pressure steam washer and cleaning detergents

Deliver supplies and materials outside the hospital using the departmental van

Pick up and deliver supplies and materials within the hospital

Maintain the facilities Reverse Osmosis water maker

Place weekly orders for animal feed and bedding to ensure stock is maintained

QUALIFICATIONS:

Class G drivers license and driving experience with a clean driving record

Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member

Ability to lift 25kg on a regular basis

Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bending, pushing and pulling carts and racks up to 50 kg

Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills

Must have a good attendance record

Ability to understand and solve mechanical problems is an asset

Experience working with lab or farm animals is an asset

Experience working with cleaning machinery is an asset
