The Animal Resources Centre at University Health Network is one of the largest hospital-based program in Canada to support research in a multitude of human diseases across the UHN hospitals and research institutes. ARC operates six sites at four campuses and with one main ARC Office.

Salary: $21.94- $27.43 per hour
Shifts: 7-3PM, Monday to Friday
Status: Permanent Full Time

Position Summary
The role of Animal Care Support Worker provides support within the Animal Resource Centre Department by cleaning and stocking of supplies, daily washing, cleaning, sanitizing and sterilization of a variety of equipment and spaces used within the ARC department. Familiarity with sterilization processes and standard operating procedures an asset. Duties include but not limited to the following:

  • Processing cages and other supplies brought to by ARC staff
  • Washing and prepping items for autoclaving.
  • Maintain clean environment by sweeping, mopping and running the floor machine routinely.
  • Dump, scrape and restack cages, maintain and clean machines along with other daily cleaning.
  • Polish stainless steel, clean windows/doors, vacuum/scrub floors, clean dump station and filter. Other weekly routine cleaning.
  • Monthly cleaning involving more attention to detail and time management
  • Ability to work in all areas of wash up co-operatively with a team.
  • Need to ensure quality control measures are carried out, such as biological indicators in autoclaves and the recording of chemical indicators according to established standards.
  • Also carry out routine machine maintenance on washers and autoclaves as well

Qualifications

At minimum completion of high school or recognized equivalent required

  • Post-secondary certificate program
  • Related experience an asset
  • Must not be allergic to rodents
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team and independently
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (W.H.M.I.S.)
  • Knowledge of autoclave technology an asset
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards
  • Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements under UHN Privacy policy
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies
  • Ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
