JOB SUMMARY:

Do you want to make a difference with your legal career? SE Health, one of Canada's largest social enterprises, is seeking an Associate Legal Counsel to join its growing legal team. Reporting to the SVP, Chief Legal, Privacy and Compliance Officer, you will be an integral member of the legal department and responsible for advising SE Health on a full spectrum of legal matters to ensure organizational needs are balanced with strategic priorities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Legal Advice

  • Be a subject matter expert and provide practical, timely and strategic legal advice to SE Health internal stakeholders on legal implications of plans, policies, and other matters
  • Draft, review, negotiate and provide advice on a broad range of commercial agreements, including service agreements and funding agreements
  • Advise on procurement matters, in collaboration with third party sourcing specialists
  • Proactively identify and manage legal organizational risks associated with SE Health's operations including drafting of policies and procedures, training with applicable laws, regulations and business objectives
  • Advise on corporate governance, including drafting and review of corporate by-laws, resolutions, policies and procedures
  • Providing advice to SE Health privacy office on complex privacy and FOI issues including interpretation of PHIPPA, and other provincial and federal privacy legislation
  • Provide legal support for SE Health strategic initiatives in the health sector and with other health organizations
  • Providing advice respecting compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements

Legal Management

  • Manage SE Health litigation throughout claim life cycle, including researching, preparing litigation documents, attending mediations, arbitrations, etc. and providing oversight of external counsel
  • Collaborate with Chief Legal, Privacy and Compliance Officer on management of complex legal matters and liaise with external counsel when required
  • Draft precedent documents, including agreements, policies, and procedures and establish and maintain precedent database
  • Collaborate with members of the Legal, Privacy and Compliance team to provide legal support to SE Health initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of an LLB/JD and licensed to practice law in Ontario
  • Minimum of five (5) years related legal experience in a law firm or in-house setting with a focus on commercial and corporate law
  • Previous experience practicing in a health setting an asset
  • Strong research, writing, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional negotiation, interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to effectively convey complex legal concepts in an understandable manner to a diverse audience
  • Demonstrate professional judgment, tact, and diplomacy
  • Superior ability to manage time and balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment

This role is a hybrid and may require travel to our Markham or Toronto office as needed
